🏠 BUSINESS TAX STRATEGY:
The Augusta Rule (IRS §280A(g))
Most business owners don’t realize this but under the Augusta Rule, you may be able to rent your personal residence to your business for up to 14 days per year.
👉🏾and the income can be tax-free to you
👉🏾while your business still receives a deductible expense
Yes; when done correctly, it’s 100% legal.
Here’s how it works 👇🏾
Your business rents your home for legitimate business purposes such as:
✔ Board or leadership meetings
✔ Strategy or planning sessions
✔ Content creation or branding meetings
✔ Client appreciation or networking dinners
✔ Annual or quarterly business meetings
Your business pays fair market rent (what a similar venue would cost)
✔ The business deducts the rental expense
✔ You personally receive the income tax-free
✔ No 1099 is issued (when rules are followed)

⚠️ But; it MUST be done the RIGHT way
To qualify, you should:
🔹 Document the business purpose
🔹 Maintain meeting minutes or agenda
🔹 Issue an invoice from yourself to your business
🔹 Use legitimate fair-market rental value
🔹 Not exceed 14 days per year
If it’s not documented: it doesn’t count.
If it’s inflated: it becomes a risk.
That’s where many people go wrong.

Not every business qualifies; but many do.
At Thurman Taxes, we help you:
✔ Determine if it applies to your situation
✔ Establish proper documentation
✔ Calculate fair market rental value
✔ Implement it legally & safely
Before you try this on your own: let us review it.

💡 BUSINESS TAX TIP: Don’t Miss This Deduction
Most business owners don’t know about this; but the IRS has a rule called the De Minimis Safe Harbor Rule that may allow you to expense certain purchases immediately instead of depreciating them over several years.
Here’s what that means in plain English 👇🏽
If you buy smaller business items, like laptops, cameras, tools, office furniture, etc, you may be able to deduct the full amount in the same year instead of spreading the write-off out.
Under this rule, you can generally expense:
✔ Up to $2,500 per item (without audited financials)
✔ Up to $5,000 per item (with audited financials)
Examples where this may apply:
🟢 Laptops & tablets
🟢 Tools & trade equipment
🟢 Office desks & chairs
🟢 Cameras & media gear
🟢 Small machinery & tech
This can lead to:
🔥 Faster write-offs
🔥 Bigger deductions sooner
🔥 Lower taxable income for the year
But here’s the part most people miss 👇🏽
⚠️ You must apply the rule correctly & keep proper documentation; otherwise the deduction can be denied.
That’s where Thurman Taxes steps in.
We review your purchases to make sure:
✔ They qualify under IRS guidelines
✔ They are expensed the RIGHT way
✔ You get every legal deduction you’re entitled to
If you purchased equipment or business items this year : let us review them before you file.

💡 BUSINESS TAX TIP: New Business Owners, Don’t Miss This Deduction
Most new entrepreneurs don’t realize this… but the IRS allows you to deduct a portion of your start-up and organizational costs when you launch your business.
Under IRC §195 & §248, you may be able to deduct:
✔ Up to $5,000 in start-up expenses
✔ Up to $5,000 in organizational costs
(Additional amounts are amortized over time)
These are real costs many businesses already pay; but never claim.
Here are examples of expenses that may qualify:
🟢 Licensing & permit fees
🟢 Legal & formation filing fees
🟢 Initial branding & advertising
🟢 Market research & feasibility costs
🟢 Training, onboarding & setup expenses
🟢 Professional consultations before launch
👉 And yes, this applies even if your business is brand new.
The problem is; a lot of new business owners:
✖ don’t keep records
✖ don’t tell their tax preparer
✖ assume “start-up costs don’t count yet”
And they end up missing out on deductions they’re legally entitled to.
At Thurman Taxes, we review your launch activity to make sure you:
✔ Claim every qualifying expense the RIGHT way
✔ Maximize your legal deduction
✔ Avoid mistakes that trigger audits later
If you started a new business recently, let us take a look before you file.
