My friends often ask me how I run a business as a college student. Honestly, it is what you make it.

For me, some weeks are harder than others.

Midterm week was one of the hard ones. It was full of studying and going to bed early. I still answered emails and questions as fast as I could. What slipped was keeping up with transactions, so that weekend I drove home and worked to get caught up.

That's why time management is the biggest thing. For me it comes down to being consistent and reliable. Consistency is looking at the books almost daily. Reliability is answering emails and questions as quickly as possible. I shoot to answer the same day I receive them.

How do you manage your time?

10/14/2026

79 days left this year. Here are 4 reasons now is the time to hand off your books.

1. It's still fixable.
There's still time to catch up and get ready for taxes this year. Wait until January and you don't start the new year clean, you start it behind. The longer it sits, the bigger the job gets.

2. The mess is the job.
People think, 'My books are a mess. It's embarrassing. How could I hand this over to someone?' Four words: this is my job. You don't have to clean anything up first. That part is mine.

3. You get your time back.
Yesterday we were taking down fence and the wire winder wouldn't pull the wire, so we had to reverse while rolling it up. A pain, to say the least. Doing your own books can feel the same way. Those 3 to 10 hours a month on invoices and transactions could go to new leads, more customers, or more product to sell. In my experience a bookkeeper most often pays for itself.

4. You'll finally know where you stand.
The numbers are what keep a business open. Which months bring in the most? Which cost the most? What you don't know about your own numbers is what costs you the most. Each month your financial statements are ready for you to look at. No more guessing.

Message me while there's still time, and we'll get started where you left off.

A friend asked me some questions about my job this week. Here are my honest answers.

Can you see my real bank account?
Most often, yes. It's the best way to keep your books accurate. If a client doesn't want me to see their bank account, I have to ask about most transactions what they were spent on, what a check was for, or who a deposit came from.

Can you move my money?
It depends on what you hire me for. If it's bookkeeping only, I just need to see your transactions, and I don't move your money. If I'm also handling your payroll or bills, then yes, but only to pay those, and you'll always know before it happens.

What does a month with you look like?
Most people think a bookkeeper just looks at the past. Records what happened, then hands it over at tax time. I want my work to matter before then. Every month I categorize your transactions using a chart of accounts built for your business, and I reconcile everything so it matches your bank.

Some bookkeepers stay outside your business. I want to be in it with you. Your success means I'm doing my job correctly.

It's your business. You decide how much I see and what I touch.

This is why an income statement is more important than you may think.

Businesses often fall into the same pattern. They keep doing what they have always done and assume it is working because they are still open.

But here is the thing. Your costs went up. Materials went up. Your time is worth more than it was three years ago. But your prices did not move.

So how do you know if you are even making money anymore? Your income statement.

It is pretty simple. It shows you what came in, what went out, and what you actually kept. That is it.

Now I hope for everyone reading this your income is sitting above your expenses. But if you do not know the answer to that right now — that is a problem.

Take a look at yours. Because what you do not know about your own numbers is what costs you the most.

Someone asked me a question this week I was not ready for.

Over this last week we had three people come lecture us on the arts of Sioux Falls. I know that might seem like a boring topic but read till the end.

The first was an advocate for music. She talked about a young man who grew up and could not afford a theatre ticket. His passion in life became making sure everyone could see concerts for free.

The second had a passion for art — mainly sculptures. He helped bring other peoples passions to life and even helped them turn it into a job selling their work.

And the last talked about how passion turns into advocacy.

I had to think about that for a minute. What is my passion?

After writing it out here is what I came up with — helping local businesses and making sure they stay open.

Now you may ask how am I going to manage to do that. Many business owners are pretty good at what they do. But they often either do not keep track of or do not care for the numbers side of things. And the numbers are what keeps a business open. Being able to see what months you have the most revenue and the ones you have the most expenses.

Every one of these business owners is out there following their passion. Mine is making sure the numbers never get in the way of theirs.

Another quick life update.

I am going to be honest — never thought I would use the library as much as I do. But I use it every day. It is a good break from the dorm. Somewhere quiet where I can get all my work done and not just sit on my phone.

As I grow into campus life I am finding that the places and people you surround yourself with matter more than anything. Finding a Bible study group. Worship on Thursday nights.

Sometimes a new view is not always a new place. It might just be an idea or an opinion someone gave you.

Those things that seem minor can change your whole perspective. On where you are at in life. In your business. In everything.

One small idea could make you see something monumental completely different. Or notice something you have been overlooking all along.
This is my new view. Class started today

I have had a few questions over the last few weeks so here are your answers.

Are you going to continue to run Verity while you are in college? Absolutely. The whole reason I am going to college is to grow as an accountant so I can continue to provide the best service possible for my clients. Verity is not a side project. It is my business and I am not going anywhere.

What school are you going to? Augustana University. Number 1 in South Dakota and 6th in the nation for CPA exam pass rates. I chose Augustana because I want to learn from the best so I can bring that back to the people who trust me with their businesses.

Will my books still get done on time? Every single month. Accounts will be reconciled monthly as usual and ready for whatever is coming your way. I have done client books from my office, from my kitchen table, and from my laptop at the ranch. Where I sit does not change how I show up.

Can I still call you when I need something? I highly encourage it. Will I have to call you back after class? Probably. But I will always be here.

Will I get passed off to someone else? No. It is me and me only. When you call Verity you get Huntley. Period.

If you have any other questions you know where to find me.

Let me be honest for a second. Change is one of the hardest things in most peoples lives.

Change can mean a million different things. In my case it is going to college and getting ready for a new chapter of my life. For you it could be anything under the sun. Changing locations. Hiring new employees. Handing your books over to someone else.

So why is change so hard to make in your business?

I think it comes down to trust. Trusting someone else to do as good of a job as you did. Trusting that this decision is not going to backfire and cost you everything you have built.

That is a real fear. And I respect it.

But staying in the same spot because you are afraid to let someone help is not protecting your business. It is holding it back.

The right change with the right person does not cost you what you built. It helps you build more.

Here is what I would go back and tell myself 6 months ago before starting a business.....

The short story — keep on keeping on.

At 18 it takes a second for people to realize you are here to stay. That is not just another idea you will abandon in a couple weeks. You have to be patient build trust with the people around you and eventually they will send people your way.

Also continue to be yourself do not conform to other peoples stereotypes or what they want you to be. It is what makes you and your business unique.

So the long story is be patient, build trust, show people your character, and with time it will come.
