UCT Weekly Tax Brief — October 5, 2026
Urgent actions
- The October 15 extension deadline is now 10 days away. No rule changed, but UCT should finalize its extension-client list, collect missing documents, obtain signatures, and transmit returns early enough to correct rejections. Rejected extended returns may be retransmitted through October 20. An extension to file did not extend the April 15 payment deadline.
- Strengthen UCT’s cybersecurity procedures. On October 2, the IRS warned tax professionals about continuing attempts to steal taxpayer data, login credentials, W-2 information and money. The IRS recommends multifactor authentication, strong unique passwords, software updates and careful review of unexpected emails, texts, invoices and social-media messages.
UCT action: Confirm MFA is active on tax software, email, cloud storage and IRS accounts. Remind the team never to send client documents through unsecured text messages or personal email.
New credit affecting Alabama clients
- Treasury and the IRS released proposed rules for the new Education Freedom Tax Credit. Beginning January 1, 2027, eligible taxpayers may receive a nonrefundable federal credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying cash donations to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations. Proposed rules allow a combined maximum of $3,400 for married couples filing jointly. Alabama has elected to participate.
Why it matters: This is not a credit for tax-year 2026 returns. UCT should add it to 2027 client education and require official contribution documentation before allowing a claim. Do not treat ordinary school tuition or direct payments to a student as qualifying contributions.
Special deadline relief
- New Israel-related relief extends qualifying deadlines through September 30, 2027. It applies to certain individuals and businesses in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, plus other taxpayers who meet the notices’ eligibility rules. The IRS automatically identifies many taxpayers based on their filed address; eligible taxpayers outside the covered area may need to contact the IRS disaster hotline.
UCT action: Screen any military, deployed, international or business clients affected by the conflict before applying the normal October 15 deadline.
E-file and compliance status
- Live MeF production remains operational. The separate testing environment remains in its scheduled tax-year 2026 transition through October 13; this does not stop UCT from transmitting production returns.
