The market can recover while a retiree’s portfolio still struggles to catch up.

That’s the risk illustrated here. If a downturn hits just as you begin taking income, you may need to sell investments while their value is down. Those withdrawals leave fewer dollars invested to participate in a recovery.

The five years before and five years after retirement are a useful time to review:

• How much you’ll need to withdraw each year
• Where that income will come from during a downturn
• Whether your investment mix still fits your income needs and risk tolerance

You can’t choose when the next market decline happens. You can build a retirement income plan that accounts for one.

If you’re approaching retirement, let’s review how your portfolio and income plan would work together through a difficult market.

September is **Life Insurance Awareness Month**, but the conversation should be about more than simply whether you own a policy.

The more important question is:

**Does the coverage you have still do the job you need it to do?**

According to LIMRA’s 2026 research, roughly half of American adults report owning life insurance, yet millions still say they need coverage or need more than they currently have.

That gap matters because life rarely stays the same.

Income changes.
Families grow.
Mortgages get paid down.
Businesses grow.
Retirement gets closer.
Estate and legacy goals evolve.

A policy you purchased 10 or 15 years ago may still be perfectly appropriate. Or it may no longer match the reason you bought it in the first place.

That is why I believe life insurance should be reviewed as part of the **overall financial plan**, alongside investments, retirement income, taxes, risk management and estate planning.

LIAM is a good reminder to pull out your existing coverage and ask three simple questions:

**What do I have?
Why do I have it?
Does it still accomplish what I need it to accomplish?**

Sometimes the answer is that nothing needs to change.

And that clarity has value too.
