YOUR BILLS
DON’T WAIT
FOR THE MARKET.

Some expenses can’t wait.

Some spending can.

And not every retirement dollar needs to perform the same job.

The better question:

Which expenses must be paid regardless of market conditions?

Prepare the income.
Give growth its time.

Your bills don’t wait for the market.

Neither do groceries, utilities, insurance premiums, or property taxes.

Yet retirement planning often begins with:

“How much can I withdraw from my investments?”

Perhaps a better starting point is:

“Which expenses must be paid regardless of what the markets are doing?”

Some retirement expenses are essential.

Others are flexible.

And different financial assets can serve different responsibilities.

The objective isn’t to eliminate investment risk or guarantee every possible outcome.

It’s to organize retirement income so that essential needs aren’t unnecessarily dependent on favorable market conditions.

A retirement plan should not require every asset to perform well at the same time.

THE PLAN YOU KEEP
MAY NOT BE
THE PLAN YOU HAD.

Circumstances change.

Assumptions change.

Needs change.

Good retirement planning doesn’t require everything to stay the same.

It requires the ability to adapt.

The plan you keep may not be the plan you had.

Medicare’s annual enrollment period begins October 15.

For many retirees, the instinct is simple:

“My plan is renewing. I’ll just keep it.”

That may be perfectly reasonable.

But renewal doesn’t necessarily mean nothing has changed.

Doctors. Prescriptions. Benefits. Costs.

The same principle applies to retirement planning.

An arrangement that worked beautifully five years ago may deserve another look—not because it was wrong, but because circumstances have changed.

Good preparation doesn’t require constant adjustment.

It requires knowing when adjustment might be necessary.

A retirement plan should provide stability without becoming rigid.

THE RATE
ISN’T THE
ASSIGNMENT.

Before asking:

“What does it pay?”

Ask:

“What does this money
need to do?”

Different dollars can have
different jobs.

Good retirement planning
starts with the assignment.

SOME OPPORTUNITIES EXPIRE.

Retirement isn’t only about
how much you have.

It is also about
when you have choices.

A planning opportunity available at 62
may not exist at 73.

The better question:

What choices do I have today
that I may not have later?

Retirement planning has an unusual dimension that investment planning can easily miss:

Some opportunities expire.

The years between retirement and later-life income requirements may create flexibility around taxes, Roth conversions, Social Security, charitable giving, withdrawals, and Medicare planning.

Later, you may have a larger account balance—but fewer choices.

That leads to a better retirement question:

“What choices are available today that may not be available later?”

More money creates capacity.

Optionality creates flexibility.

Good retirement architecture pays attention to both.

SOMEONE
WILL BE WRONG.

One forecast says
markets could fall sharply.

Another says
they could keep rising.

So perhaps the question isn’t:

Who should I believe?

Ask instead:

What happens to my retirement
if the forecast I believe
is wrong?

Preparation doesn’t require
certainty about the future.

It requires resilience
when the future surprises us.

Less Prediction. More Preparation.™

One investment firm says the S&P 500 could fall more than 35% by the end of 2027.

Other forecasters expect it above 8,000.

Same market.

Smart people.

Very different futures.

Our instinct is to ask:

“Who’s right?”

But for someone approaching retirement, there may be a better question:

“What happens to my retirement if the forecast I believe is wrong?”

Forecasts can help us understand possibilities.

They become dangerous when the plan requires one of them to happen.

We don’t need to know exactly what markets, inflation or interest rates will do next.

We need to understand what our retirement will do when they surprise us.

You don’t need certainty about the future when the plan has prepared for more than one future.
