I’m sorry—I hate to say it—but if you did not obtain your software directly from TaxSlayer Pro, Drake, OLT Pro, or another tax-software provider, and your account operates underneath another company’s master software account, you are generally a sub-service bureau.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a sub-service bureau! Just know your position, understand your contract, and accurately explain the services you provide. 💻

A service bureau usually has a direct agreement with the tax-software provider. It purchases or controls a master software package and can:

✅ Create and manage software accounts for independent tax offices
✅ Recruit EROs and sub-offices
✅ Provide software access, training, and support
✅ Establish authorized software or transmission-related fees
✅ Assist offices with bank-product enrollment
✅ Monitor production and manage its software network

A sub-service bureau receives its software access through an established service bureau instead of contracting directly with the software developer. It may recruit and support additional tax offices, but it still operates within the master service bureau’s software hierarchy.

Think of it like this:

Software company → Master service bureau → Sub-service bureau → ERO/tax office

Your EFIN does not automatically make you a service bureau. An EFIN authorizes an approved business to electronically file tax returns. Your place in the software hierarchy depends on who issued your software account and who holds the direct provider agreement.

There is room for everybody—but please learn the structure before advertising the title. Being a sub-service bureau is still a legitimate business opportunity. Just know your service, know who you’re contracted under, understand every fee, and stop presenting yourself as the direct provider when another company controls the master account.

It’s not about making anyone feel small. It’s about transparency, proper terminology, and knowing exactly what you’re selling! 💅🏽💻📚

A lot of tax pros hear words like rebates, add-ons, and revenue sharing and assume they’re all the same thing.

They’re not.

💰 Rebates are volume incentives.

They’re designed to reward production. More returns generally means more opportunity for rebates. No volume, no incentive.

‼️What many people don’t realize is that rebate payouts aren’t universal.

Different service bureaus have different agreements and payout schedules. One organization may receive rebates in May. Another may receive them in July. Some receive distributions at multiple points throughout the year depending on the entities involved.

💰 Add-ons are something entirely different.

An add-on is an optional fee an ERO chooses to place on a return in order to generate additional revenue per client. It isn’t activated by volume. It’s activated by the pricing structure that ERO chooses to implement.

Now some people love add-ons and some people hate them.

My position is simple:

If a fee is properly disclosed, permitted by the entities involved, and the client agrees to it before services are rendered, then it becomes a pricing decision rather than an ethical issue.

Integrity is found in transparency. Sales skill is found in your ability to communicate the value of the products and services attached to that fee.

Many people fail here because they’re focused on what they’re getting instead of what the client is receiving. Self-interest makes people talk about the fee and discourage clients from participating where they don’t eat. Service makes people explain the value.

At the end of the day, rebates reward growth. Add-ons reward pricing strategy. And neither should be confused with the other.

Real talk: nobody knows all 9,800 sections of the tax code. Not me. Not your CPA. Not the chain store.

But I know the ones that apply to YOU.

Self-employed? 1099? Household changed this year? There’s probably money sitting on the table right now because nobody asked you the right question.

The tax code has roughly 9,800 sections.

You're not going to learn all of them. Neither is your competition.

What separates a preparer who survives from one who scales isn't volume of knowledge — it's infrastructure. Software that works. Support that answers. And a fee model that doesn't punish you for growing.

Here's what most bureaus won't tell you: they'll teach you the code and take your split.

We don't split. You keep 100% of your prep fees. All 50 states. Powered by TaxSlayer Pro.

Learn your clients. We'll handle the back end.

Referral-based. Faith-driven. Undefeated.

🚨 SERVICE BUREAU vs. SUB-SERVICE BUREAU — TAX PROS, KNOW THE DIFFERENCE! 💻💰

Everybody using the words “Service Bureau” may NOT have the same level of control.

There’s a difference between operating as a Service Bureau and operating underneath another company as a Sub-Service Bureau.

Before you sign up, start recruiting EROs, or advertise yourself as a Service Bureau, ask yourself:

✅ Can I issue/manage software licenses under my program?
✅ Can I enroll and manage my own EROs?
✅ Do I control the fees my program is authorized to set and receive?
✅ Do I have control of my own master EFIN/software hierarchy where applicable?
✅ Do I know exactly WHO is above me in the software hierarchy?
✅ Do I know which fees go to the bank, transmitter, software provider, Service Bureau, or another third party?

Because if another Service Bureau sits above you and controls major parts of your program, you may actually be operating as a SUB-SERVICE BUREAU — and there’s nothing automatically wrong with that.

💯 THE PROBLEM IS WHEN PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE.

A Sub-Service Bureau can still build a team, recruit EROs, provide support and create another stream of income.

But CONTROL MATTERS.

When I talk about building a Service Bureau, I’m talking about understanding your structure from the TOP DOWN:

🔥 Who controls the software relationship?
🔥 Who controls enrollment?
🔥 Who receives each back-end fee?
🔥 Who controls the ERO hierarchy?
🔥 Who actually owns the relationship with the software provider?

Tax pros, stop choosing programs based only on somebody saying:

“You can have your own Service Bureau!”

ASK QUESTIONS. 👏🏽

WHO IS ABOVE ME?
WHAT DO I ACTUALLY CONTROL?
WHAT FEES DO I ACTUALLY RECEIVE?
AM I THE SERVICE BUREAU — OR AM I A SUB-SERVICE BUREAU UNDER YOUR SERVICE BUREAU? 👀

There is room for BOTH business models.

Just make sure you know WHICH ONE YOU’RE BUILDING. 💯

🚨 TAX PROS — I’M NOT JUST SELLING TAX SOFTWARE… I’M A SOFTWARE SERVICE BUREAU. 💻💰

And I built JMO Elite Tax Pro Software with one thing in mind:

TAX PROFESSIONALS SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUILD THEIR BUSINESS WITHOUT SOMEBODY HAVING THEIR HAND IN EVERY DOLLAR THEY MAKE. 👏🏽

I’ve been on the tax side. I understand the work that goes into building a clientele, managing preparers, staying compliant, answering clients ALL season and actually running the business.

So when I stepped into the Service Bureau side, I wanted to do things DIFFERENTLY.

Here’s what we’re bringing to the table:

🔥 $0 SERVICE BUREAU FEE

🔥 $0 SPLIT FEE

💰 EROs SET THEIR OWN FEES
Your e-file fee. Your document preparation fee. Your business.

🏦 YOU CHOOSE YOUR BANK
Refund Advantage or SBTPG.

💵 KEEP 100% OF YOUR ELIGIBLE AUDIT ASSISTANCE UPSELL EARNINGS
Why build the clientele and sell the service just to give somebody else a percentage?

🎯 VOLUME INCENTIVES
Produce 50+ funded returns? We believe production should be REWARDED.

And YES — we have opportunities for EROs AND PTIN HOLDERS.

Some service bureaus make their money by stacking fees on the tax professional.

I decided I’d rather build WITH my tax professionals.

Because if the people underneath my Service Bureau are WINNING, growing their offices and keeping more of what they earn…

JMO ELITE IS WINNING TOO. 💯

I’m building more than another software company.

I’M BUILDING A SERVICE BUREAU TAX PROFESSIONALS ACTUALLY WANT TO STAY WITH.

So if you’ve been looking at your current software fees wondering…

“WHY AM I STILL PAYING ALL OF THIS?” 👀😂

Maybe it’s time we talk.

(Them) **"I found software cheaper."**

Right. And you'll find out *why* it was cheaper about halfway through tax season.

Cheap software comes with cheap everything else. No real support when the system goes down at 9pm on a Friday. No compliance guidance when you're staring at a return you're not sure about. No education. No systems. Just a login and a "good luck."

And don't forget the service bureau fee they conveniently left out of that "low price" — plus the split they're taking off your upsells.

Here? None of that.

No service bureau fee. You keep your e-file fee, your doc prep fee, and EVERY upsell — audit assistance included — with NO split.

Because you're not shopping for the cheapest login. You're building a business. And a business needs more than software — it needs support, compliance, education, and systems that actually hold up when it counts.

That's what **Jmo Elite Tax Pro Software ** is built for.

You get what you pay for.

So pay for something that pays you back.

🚨 SERVICE BUREAUS, EROs & TAX PREPARERS… LET’S TALK! 👀💰

Tax season is coming, so let me ask you something…

Preparers: Do you actually know what your ERO is charging you?

EROs: Do you actually know what your service bureau is making off YOUR volume? 👀

And Service Bureaus: Are you helping your EROs grow… or just collecting fees? 😮‍💨😂

Everybody should know WHO is getting paid, WHAT they’re getting paid, and WHY.

Because being busy all tax season doesn’t always mean YOU’RE the one making the money! 💯💰

Know your numbers. Know your fees. Know your worth.
