But one of my biggest pet peeves is when a new client comes to me and spends the entire appointment discussing their previous tax preparer.
Please don’t come telling me:
❌ How they allegedly scammed you
❌ What they did or didn’t add to your return
❌ What they charged you
❌ What they promised you
❌ Everything they supposedly did wrong
Respectfully, I care not to hear it. I wasn’t there, I didn’t prepare the return, and I don’t know both sides of the situation.
If you’re a new client, welcome! It’s perfectly fine to say, “I previously filed with H&R Block,” or name your former preparer. Okay—that’s enough. Cut it short! 😂
Bring me your tax documents and any previous returns I need to review. Tell me about an actual tax issue that needs to be corrected—but leave the gossip, personal drama, and preparer-bashing behind.
I’m here to properly prepare your return, answer your tax questions, and provide professional service. I’m not here to discuss or tear down another tax professional.
And honestly, if you’ll come to me talking badly about them, I have to assume you may leave my office and do the same thing to me.

You can have the storefronts. You can have the team. You can have the matching polos and the sign on the busiest corner in town.
But if you don't know your tax laws, what are you actually teaching your people?
And I mean actually teaching. Not reading off a PowerPoint somebody handed you. Anybody can stand in front of a room and click through slides. The real test is when somebody in that room raises their hand and asks a question that's not on the slide. Then what? If your answer is "let me get back to you" every time, you're not training preparers. You're narrating a deck.
Because the software will spit out a refund no matter what you type into it. It doesn't know that client's kid aged out of the child tax credit. It doesn't know that side hustle should've been a Schedule C with expenses, not "other income." It doesn't know the difference between a legitimate Head of Household claim and one that's going to get your client a letter in 18 months.
The preparer is supposed to know that. If you're keying in what's on the W-2 and hitting submit, you're not a tax professional. You're a very expensive typist.
And Circular 230 doesn't care how nice your office is. It requires due diligence. It requires you to actually know the law you're applying. And it holds the person supervising accountable for what everyone under them is doing. You can't outsource that to a franchise manual or a slide deck.
Storefronts prove you can sign a lease. A team proves you can hire. Neither one proves you can stand behind a return when the IRS asks why.
Take your yearly class. Get your credits. Do your research every single season. Know it well enough to answer the question that isn't on the slide. That's the job.
