New data from the Federal Reserve, compiled by USAFacts, breaks down exactly what different income brackets actually own. For the middle class, real estate makes up 35.9% of household assets, by far the largest single category, followed by retirement accounts at 19.8%, other assets at 24.3%, and just 13.2% in stocks and mutual funds combined with private businesses.
The breakdown gets more revealing moving up the ladder. The top 1% holds only 13.5% of their wealth in real estate, with nearly half, 49.2%, sitting in stocks and mutual fund shares instead. That pattern holds fairly steady across every bracket below the top 20%: real estate ownership actually increases as income decreases, topping out around 40% for the second and bottom quintiles, while stock market exposure shrinks the further down the income scale you go. In short, the wealthy build wealth primarily through markets and business ownership, while most other households are far more reliant on their home as their single biggest asset.

Higher education is hitting a demographic cliff. After years of growth, the pipeline of 18-year-olds is dwindling—a result of lower birthrates.
The largest number of Americans born in a single year arrived on campus in the autumn of 2025, and now a falloff is looming. College enrollments are forecast to drop 13% by 2041, according to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. In some parts of the country—especially the Midwest and the Northeast—the declines have already begun.
You would think a shrinking pool of students would automatically make it easier to get into college. But that won’t necessarily be true everywhere, especially at the most competitive schools, higher-education analysts say.
It is impossible to precisely predict colleges’ admission rates in the future as those numbers depend on a lot of things, including the reputations of campus culture, sports team wins and even the weather. But the demographic cliff is hitting just as another phenomenon is coming into play: a flight-to-quality, where the most sought-after schools are attracting an ever-growing number of applicants, while less-attractive schools draw fewer.

With a growing number of colleges and universities costing more than $100,000 a year, higher education is slipping out of reach for many students, several reports now show.
Just 12% of surveyed Americans say four-year colleges are affordable, according to a recent Lumina Foundation and Gallup poll, which surveyed 14,000 adults without a degree or who are working toward one, nearly 6,000 college graduates, and 2,000 employers June 1-15. Cost is the single biggest barrier to entry for prospective students, an earlier Lumina Foundation and Gallup release from the same study said.

$WMT $TGT Walmart, the nation’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer, reported fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations. But same-store sales only grew by 2.6% compared to last year — well below a FactSet consensus forecast of 3.5%. Mizuho analyst David Bellinger called that comparable store sales whiff “one of the biggest misses in years.”
Meanwhile, Target on Wednesday posted quarterly earnings that were boosted by tariff refunds and raised its full-year guidance, as the retailer shows more signs its turnaround is taking hold.

Former NBA player Kent Bazemore is warning professional athletes to think carefully about getting married during their playing careers following his own divorce.
Bazemore recently said athletes should consider waiting until their careers are over before marrying, reflecting on the end of his marriage to Samantha Serpe. His final NBA season came in 2022, and court records show Serpe listed their separation date as November 23, 2022, before filing for divorce in January 2023.
The divorce was finalized in 2024. According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Bazemore paid Serpe $1,520,944.34 for her ownership share of their Atlanta marital home. She also retained a 2019 Mercedes G550, while Bazemore kept several other vehicles. Neither party was awarded alimony, and Bazemore was ordered to pay $5,000 per month in child support for their two children.
Bazemore has since said the experience changed his perspective on marriage, advising professional athletes to consider waiting until after their playing careers before making the commitment.
