Trump Accounts are newly established tax-advantaged investment accounts for children (acting as a "starter" IRA) that function similarly to traditional Individual Retirement Accounts. They were created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to encourage long-term savings for American children. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key features of the program include:
The $1,000 Seed: The federal government will deposit a one-time $1,000 pilot program contribution into the accounts of eligible children. [1, 2]
Eligibility: To qualify, the child must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number and born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. [1, 2]
Contributions: Parents or guardians can act as custodians and contribute up to $5,000 annually per child. [1, 2]
Access & Growth: The funds are restricted to broad market investments (like ETFs or index funds) and grow tax-deferred. The money cannot be accessed by the child until they turn 18, at which point it converts to a traditional IRA. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Families have signed up nearly 6 million children for these accounts. While you can open and fund these accounts, standard contributions are scheduled to officially open on July 4, 2026. [1, 2, 3]
Parents and guardians can register by submitting Form 4547 through the Official IRS Portal or by downloading the official Trump Accounts mobile app, which is available on iOS and
