Losing a top performer costs more than most business owners realize, often more than double an employee’s salary. Turnover is something most employers will eventually face, but having a framework to keep great people on your team should be part of your overall strategy for long-term growth. Great insights here from ASBN Small Business Network .

Retention expert David Alemian shares how tying benefits to long-term goals helps businesses reduce turnover and keep top talent.

Though Life Insurance Awareness Month ended on the 30th, there is no end to the need for conversation around this important protection asset. So, let’s extend it. Here’s an answer to the final question in this series:

How much personal life insurance do you already have?

Many people have some coverage through work and may not realize it's often not enough and usually doesn't follow you if you change jobs. Families that are dependent on one income don’t always consider the stay-at-home partner – parent or not – as a financial asset to cover. Then there’s the gig economy workforce that relies on 1099 income. Sole proprietors and self-employed professionals don’t have the employer life insurance policy as a benefit.

Trying to calculate the type of coverage you may need and can afford can be complicated. It’s worth a conversation. DM me or share a comment if you would like to start that discussion.

How much would you like to set aside for an emergency fund?

This is the 6th question in our 7-question Life Insurance Awareness Month. It’s true that life doesn't pause for grief. The death benefit can enable loved ones to cover the unexpected, without dipping into savings or going into debt while they're still processing the loss. But there’s more that permanent can do, particularly when you consider a policy’s cash value. The following details 10 ways to use as a living benefit.

College costs keep climbing every year. This includes community college and trade schools. Being able to pay for tuition and all that comes with it is one of the biggest financial goals parents have in caring for their kids. This brings us to the 5th question in our 7-question Life Insurance Awareness Month series:

How many children will need college funding?

Beyond the primary death benefit, whole life insurance policies provide the living benefit of accrued cash value. This is a great article on how permanent life insurance can complement 529 plans, grow flexible cash value, and help families manage rising college costs while preserving financial aid options.

How can permanent life insurance help when saving for college?

Childcare can be an enormous expense for parents. This goes beyond a daycare facility. This includes daily school pickups, after-school activities, health care, groceries, and more.

Now imagine if you were to pass away leaving your child’s other parent or guardian with those costs to shoulder on their own. This brings us to the 4th question in our 7-question Life Insurance Awareness Month series:

How much would you like to provide for childcare?

can help cover these and other costs that pertain to childcare. No one wants to contemplate these scenarios but doing so is a part of parenthood.

This can be a difficult conversation but a necessary one.

Let’s address debt as it pertains to life insurance:

How much debt would you like to pay off immediately?

If you were to pass away tomorrow, your debt wouldn’t go with you. Your loved ones would still be on the hook for whatever is owed. This could include but not be limited to:

🏠 Mortgage
🚘 Car loans
💳 Credit cards

A life insurance death benefit can give your loved ones the flexibility to wipe that slate clean in one lump sum enabling them to stay in their home and stay current on bills, instead of scrambling or taking on new debt during the hardest time of their lives.

Let’s continue our Life Insurance Awareness Month series with the following question:

How many years should income be provided after you're gone?

Let’s say your youngest child just started kindergarten. Whether you are a single parent or co-parenting, consider how many years your income needs to provide for your 5-year-old not to mention any siblings. Are we talking 6 years? 13 years? Through college?

The length of time matters as much as the dollar amount. A life insurance policy designed for "a few years" looks very different from one designed to carry a young family through their child’s college graduation. Getting clear on that timeline will help you determine the optimal size and type of life insurance coverage.

I stress the importance of workplace benefits with my business owner clients all the time. I’m not talking about a ping pong table in the break room. Employees want companies to value and invest in their time and wellness. This article featured in my recent newsletter from BOSS Publishing lays this out well.

Explore how employee amenities, including workplace dining programs and shared spaces, are becoming a competitive advantage for talent retention.

Last Tuesday, I kicked off Life Insurance Awareness Month with a post that posed 7 questions to help you figure out how much life insurance coverage you may need. Throughout the month I’ll answer each question with relatable scenarios to help you understand the impact of the death benefit on the lives of loved ones left behind.

Let's start with the first one.

Question 1: How much annual income would you like to provide, if you were no longer here?

Here’s a scenario: Sarah handles the mortgage, groceries, and her daughter's gymnastics fees every month from her paycheck. She is the primary breadwinner in her family and is a life insurance policy holder. Her coverage takes into consideration her current and future income, otherwise known as Human Life Value. If she were to pass away, her grief-stricken spouse wouldn’t be burdened with worrying about short-term and long-term financial concerns. They could be fully present as the primary emotional support system for their daughter.

That's exactly what life insurance is designed to prevent. The death benefit can replace your income, giving your family the breathing room to grieve without a financial emergency layered on top.
