Most small business owners are running on operational mode. And that makes sense. Day to day demands are relentless.

But here’s what the data says. Nearly 4 in 5 small businesses say long-term planning is difficult. And only 35% have a formal growth plan in place.
That’s the gap we help close.

There are three levels of organizational management:
🔵 Strategic. Thinking 2+ years ahead. Where is this business going?
🔵 Tactical. Planning 1-2 years out. What do we need to do now to get there?
🔵 Operational. The day to day. Keeping things running.

Your financials aren’t just a record of what happened. They’re a roadmap for what’s next. At Slate Ridge, we help you see all three levels clearly.

At Slate Ridge, we have four core values. One of them is “Act for Others.”

In practice, that means speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable, doing the right thing even when it’s not the popular choice, and always prioritizing long-term relationships over short-term gain.

We implemented this value intentionally. Because we believe the standard a firm sets for itself is the same standard that carries through to the clients they serve.

Most small business owners don’t think about internal controls until something goes wrong.

Here’s a framework worth knowing.

When it comes to your financial cycles, there are four pillars that keep things clean, auditable, and protected from fraud:
🔵 Authorization. Who has the power to approve transactions? It should never be just one person.
🔵 Segregation of duties. The person who records the transaction should not be the same person who approves it or handles the cash.
🔵 Custody. Who physically controls the assets? Access should be limited and documented.
🔵 Record keeping. Every transaction needs a paper trail. If it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. “I only have a few people on my team.” That’s actually when this matters most. If full segregation isn’t possible, start here. Get a second set of eyes on reconciliations and document your approval process. It’s not perfect, but it closes the biggest gaps.

These aren’t just audit checkboxes. They’re the difference between a business that can scale and one that is vulnerable.

⏰ September 15 is a big day on the tax calendar.

Two deadlines hit at once:

📋 Partnership and S-Corp extended returns are due.
If you filed an extension in March, time is up.

💵 Q3 estimated tax payments are due.
Self-employed and pass-through entity owners — this one’s yours.
Missing either of these means penalties and interest on top of what you already owe. Not a fun way to end Q3.

Here’s what you need before the 15th:
✅ Extended return filed and submitted
✅ Q3 books reconciled and current
✅ Estimated payment calculated and paid

If your books aren’t current — that’s exactly what we’re here for.
DM me “Sept 15” and let’s get you sorted before the deadline.

Most business owners skip the SWOT. Or they do it once and forget about it.

But here’s the thing, your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats aren’t just strategy buzzwords. They’re the foundation of every financial decision you make.

💪 Strengths — Where is your money working hardest? Double down there.
⚠️ Weaknesses — Where are you bleeding cash you haven’t noticed yet?
🚀 Opportunities — What growth move are you leaving on the table because your books aren’t clean enough to see it?
🚩 Threats — What’s coming that your cash flow isn’t prepared for?

Your SWOT should be driving your budget. Your hiring decisions. Your pricing. Your forecast.

If it’s sitting in a Google Doc collecting dust then it’s not doing its job.

We help scaling business owners turn strategy into numbers. That’s where the real clarity lives.

DM me “SWOT” and let’s talk about what yours is telling you.

We work with business owners at every stage. From the think tank to rapid growth.

And one of the hardest things we see? Knowing when to let go.

Not of your business. Of your books.

Here are the signs it’s time to hand your bookkeeping off to a professional.

📅 You’re months behind on reconciling.
📉 You don’t know your actual profit margin.
😤 Tax time is a panic every single year.
🎯 You’re making big decisions without real numbers.
📈 Revenue is up. Clarity is not.
⏰ You’re spending hours on your books instead of your business.
🤝 You’re about to hire, expand, or take on investors.
💸 You’ve missed deductions because your records were a mess.

Letting go of your books isn’t losing control. It’s gaining it.
DM me “ready” and let’s talk about what that looks like for you.

The #1 thing I see new business owners get wrong:

🚩 Forming an LLC doesn’t automatically protect you.
75% of small business owners have used personal credit cards or personal loans for business expenses in the last 12 months — and that blurred line is one of the fastest ways to lose the protection you think your LLC gives you. Courts can “pierce the corporate veil” when personal and business finances aren’t kept separate.

Here’s what actually protects you:

🏦 Open a business bank account and fund it. Run every business expense through that account, not your personal cards or cash.

📄 Get an operating agreement. It’s proof your business operates as its own entity, separate from you.

✍️ Sign as the business, not yourself. Contracts, invoices, leases — sign as [Your Name], Member/Owner of [Business Name] LLC.

Separate account. Signed agreement. Proper signature. That’s what keeps your protection real. 💼

💬 Which one of these did you not know? Drop a 🙋 in the comments.

🥾 A Day in the Life at Slate Ridge
If you know me, and see me out and about, you know we don’t just do bookkeeping.
The best part of being a business owner is getting out into the community between reviewing financials and checking emails.
Of course, the day has to start with my favorite: a walk on the Ecusta Trail. ☀️
Then it’s laptop open, inbox cleared, dog walk in between (priorities), and off to The Mule at Devil’s Foot for an awesome social media presentation, shout out to WNC Real Estate Asheville Home Inspector and ThriveWNCWomenEntrepreneurNetwork
This is what “owning a business in WNC” actually looks like. 💼🐾
