Selling your business to a key employee can feel like the perfect exit strategy—but it can also create risks that many business owners don't see coming.

Your key employee knows the business, understands your customers, and may be the person you trust most to carry on the culture you've built. But when you sell internally, you may also become the lender—and your retirement could depend on the future performance of a business you no longer control.

In this video, Kyle Glenn, CFP® and exit planning advisor at Glenn Financial, explains four important risks business owners should consider before selling their business to a key employee:

• Seller financing — You may become the bank, receiving payments from the future profits of a business you no longer control.
• Where the money comes from — Can the business generate enough cash flow to support the purchase price, debt payments, and continued growth?
• Employee readiness — Is your key employee actually ready to make the transition from employee to business owner?
• Retirement risk — Will an internal sale provide enough money to close the gap between what you need for retirement and what the business can realistically generate?

One strategy to reduce the risk is to “test drive” the transition before completing the sale. Give the potential successor increasing responsibility for the business and allow them to make ownership-level decisions while you still have the ability to step back in.

If you're a business owner considering an internal sale, employee buyout, or other business exit strategy, these questions should be addressed well before anything is signed.

This one may be my most controversial video yet.

Thinking about buying a vehicle as a tax write off? That is one of the most popular tax planning options for many business owners.

And it may be one of the worst.

That decision may make or break your financial goals.

Big news! Secure 2.0 legislation now allows 529 plans to fund K-12 expenses, not just college. This includes tutoring, testing fees, curriculum materials, and more. Every parent should consider if a 529 plan is right for their family's educational needs, regardless of college plans. .0

When your child turns 18, they likely have no savings. There's a 4-year window to convert their Traditional IRA (formerly the Trump IRA) into a Roth IRA. Convert up to the standard deduction ($16,100 in 2026) to move that money tax-free. It's a powerful way to set them up for retirement with decades of growth.
