New for 2026 W-2s: qualified overtime must be reported separately in Box 12 using code TT.
That does not mean all overtime pay goes in that box. For many employees, the qualifying amount is only the extra half-time premium required under federal law—not their full overtime earnings.
Businesses with bonuses, multiple rates, shift differentials, double time or state-specific overtime should review their setup before year-end to avoid discovering a problem during W-2 processing.

Massachusetts employers will need a new PFML payroll setup beginning January 1, 2027.
The required employer contribution is shifting from the medical-leave portion of the program to the family-leave portion. For employers with 25 or more covered individuals:
- Employees may fund up to 100% of the medical-leave contribution.
- Employees may fund no more than 40% of the family-leave contribution.
- The employer funds the remaining family-leave portion.
Massachusetts must publish the final 2027 rates by October 1. Employers should use the official rate sheet, update payroll effective January 1 and give employees advance notice of the new contribution information.

General information only. Requirements can vary based on workforce size and private-plan status.

Most Massachusetts employers must make payroll withholdings on behalf of their workforce to comply with the Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) law. Learn about contribution rates and use the calculator to estimate your contribution.

September 30 closes the third payroll quarter. Before October gets busy, review:
- Unresolved payroll-tax notices
- Employee names and Social Security numbers needing correction
- Work-location or state-tax changes
- Voids, reversals or manual checks that need follow-up
- Bonuses or fringe benefits that must be handled before year-end
- Terminated employees who should no longer have system access
A short review now is easier than reconstructing the issue during W-2 season.

Payroll and HR belong together
A payroll change rarely ends with changing a deduction code.
There may also be an employee notice, a workplace poster, a policy update, a deadline and questions from employees about their paychecks.
That is why Slate Payworx is expanding beyond payroll processing to help small businesses connect payroll with practical HR support and compliance resources.
One local relationship. Fewer gaps between payroll and HR.

The third payroll quarter ends September 30. A short review now can prevent a longer cleanup during W-2 season.

Before the quarter closes, check for:

Unresolved voids or reversals
Employee names or Social Security numbers needing correction
Work-location or state-tax changes
Bonuses, fringe benefits or owner compensation needing review
Terminated employees who should no longer have system access
Payroll-tax notices that remain unresolved

The closer you get to year-end, the harder it becomes to reconstruct what happened months earlier.
