Are you taking full advantage of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) this year?

💸 Make sure you’re in the know about this valuable benefit for families with children under 17. Here’s a breakdown to help you navigate the ins and outs of the CTC:

🔍 What is the Child Tax Credit?
The CTC is a game-changer when it comes to reducing your tax bill. Plus, with the possibility of getting a refund through the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), it’s a win-win situation for many families!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who Can Claim the Child Tax Credit?
To qualify for the CTC, make sure you meet the criteria:
- Your child is under 17 at the end of the tax year.
- The child is a close relative or dependent.
- The child lived with you for more than half the year.
- You provided more than half of the child’s financial support.
- The child is a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien with a valid SSN.
- Keep in mind the income thresholds for phasing out the credit.

If you’re eyeing an electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in 2024, you’re probably aware of the $7,500 federal tax credit. Changes effective from January 1, 2023, brought new rules for eligibility and battery sourcing, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign components. The evolving battery requirements mean the list of qualifying vehicles will shift as automakers adapt.

📌 NEW-CAR PURCHASE PERKS
In a positive move for 2024, new-car buyers can now apply the tax credit at purchase, reducing upfront costs. The credit for used EVs also continues, with a similar option to claim it at purchase. Leasing remains an alternative for higher-income buyers and vehicles not qualifying for the purchase credit.

📌 ELIGIBILITY FOR 2024
The tightened rules beginning January 1, 2023 reduced the number of eligible new EVs and PHEVs, but more vehicles may qualify as automakers adjust battery sourcing. Some vehicles from Ford, Nissan, GM, and Tesla may be eligible depending on battery specifics. Verification requires checking the vehicle identification number (VIN) with the Department of Energy.

📌 KEY CHANGES AND REQUIREMENTS
The 2022 law split the tax credit into $3,750 for battery production and $3,750 for material sourcing. Vehicles must be assembled in North America, with a minimum battery size of 7 kWh and price caps of $55,000 for cars and $80,000 for SUVs.

While United States citizenship offers many benefits, there are some downsides to consider as well:

1. Tax obligations: As a U.S. citizen, you are required to report your worldwide income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), regardless of where you live. This can lead to complex tax filings and potential double taxation if the U.S. doesn’t have a tax treaty with your country of residence.

2. Renunciation difficulties: Renouncing U.S. citizenship can be a complex and costly process, and it may have implications for your ability to travel to the U.S. in the future or for any potential inheritance from U.S. citizens.

3. Selective Service registration: Male U.S. citizens are required to register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of their 18th birthday in case a military draft is reinstated.

It’s important to weigh these downsides against the benefits of U.S. citizenship and consider your individual circumstances before pursuing citizenship in the United States.

Choosing the right state to register your business in is a pivotal decision that can have long-term financial and legal implications.

As a CPA, I often guide my clients through this complex decision-making process, helping them understand the unique benefits and potential drawbacks of different states.

📍 TOP STATES FOR BUSINESS REGISTRATION

DELAWARE:A top choice for many corporations. If a business has no presence in the state, there is no income tax return requirement for this corporation.

NEVADA: Known for its lack of state corporate income tax, franchise tax, and personal income tax, Nevada is attractive for business owners looking for privacy.

WYOMING: With benefits including no corporate or personal state income taxes and low business costs, Wyoming is becoming increasingly popular for small business owners.

TEXAS: Texas offers a large economic market with no state income tax.

FLORIDA: Florida does not have a personal state income tax and does not require Partnerships or S Corps to file a state tax return. Registering a flow-through entity in Florida is a tax-wise decision. However, C Corps are subject to corporate income tax in the state.

YOUR HOME STATE: Often, registering your business in the state where you primarily operate simplifies processes and reduces costs related to foreign qualifications and compliance.
