Plan2Retire

Plan2Retire Our consultative approach provides advice on budgeting, borrowing, and monitoring your risk management strategies.

Financial planning is much more than investment management; it involves the careful crafting of a comprehensive plan based on your financial objectives, risk tolerances, age, personal and business assets, and so forth. It is a set of clearly defined recommendations and strategies. The role of an expert planner is to provide well-articulated analysis that allows you to make informed choices – with the continued flexibility to update the plan as circumstances change. We strive to help you overcome the problems of lack of understanding, fear of making a bad decision, and procrastination that some find to be barriers to getting started. If you’re a business owner, it’s worth asking yourself some long-term questions about your business legacy: What is the plan for your business when you retire? And will your business continue successfully if you or a partner becomes disabled… or worse? Bowers Advisory Group in Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland, will help you answer these and many other questions.

⚠️ Money is one of the most consistently cited sources of stress in America.

For caregivers, that weight often increases! 😮

Having a clearer picture of where things stand can help ease some of the uncertainty that makes financial stress feel heaviest in the first place.

There's no clean solution to money stress.

Most of it is caused by the unknown. The uncertainty.

World Mental Health Day recognizes just how deeply finances can impact our well-being (and vice versa).

If financial stress has been sitting in the background of your life this year, a conversation with a professional can go a long way, be it a mental health professional or a financial professional. Pursuing comfort, understanding, and compassion is a team sport.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to prioritize health.

Early detection through regular screenings is one of the most effective tools we have in the fight against breast cancer.

Here are a few small things we can do this October:

✅ Schedule your annual screening if you haven't yet

✅ Educate yourself and others on risk factors and preventative lifestyle habits

✅ Support research and organizations dedicated to advancing breast cancer prevention and care

Taking charge of your health today makes all the difference for tomorrow. 🎗️

More women than ever are starting and running businesses, and they're doing it faster than the market overall. Census data show women now own more than 14 million businesses nationwide, up 26 percent since 2012, compared with 19 percent growth for businesses as a whole.

It also means millions of women are making key decisions from scratch:

💼 How income gets paid (salary, distributions, or owner draws)
💼 Which retirement vehicle fits, and how much they can contribute
💼 How healthcare, disability, and other insurance get sourced without an employer default
💼 How the business gets valued, and what a sale or transition would look like
💼 How personal finances stay separate from the business's

The hats keep stacking up, and this month we want to tip ours to two women-owned businesses we're proud to call part of our community:

🏋️‍♀️ LA Fit Lab LLC, owned by Leah Routzahn. Leah is a personal trainer who runs her business right here in our office, in our gym space. We love seeing her at work down the hall!

💇‍♀️ Kalon Salon, owned by Gina McFarland and Melissa Schriver. Gina and Melissa are building something great together, and we're cheering them on.

Happy Women's Small Business Month to Leah, Gina, Melissa, and every woman doing it all at once. Consider stopping by and supporting them this month!

🌠 October is bringing a little celestial entertainment! The annual Draconid meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of October 8–9, with excellent viewing conditions thanks to an almost moonless sky.
Unlike many meteor showers that are best viewed in the early morning hours, the Draconids are an evening event. This year's peak is expected around 9 PM EDT on October 8, so there's no need to stay up until dawn. 🌌
Here's how to make the most of it:
🔭 Find a dark spot. Head somewhere away from city lights with a clear view of the sky.
✨ Give your eyes time to adjust. Allow about 30 minutes to get used to the darkness.
🌙 Leave the equipment at home. You won't need a telescope or binoculars. Just look up and take in as much of the sky as possible.
The Draconids typically produce around five meteors per hour under ideal conditions, although they've surprised skywatchers with spectacular displays in the past.
The shower runs from October 6–10, so you may have several opportunities to catch a shooting star, weather permitting.
Will you be watching? 🌠

Good news! The Draconid meteor shower peaks under almost moonless skies on Oct. 8-9.

Cyber criminals pay extra attention to accounts tied to money.

A 2026 FBI study found that over 12,400 of those victims lost more than $100,000 each, and the average reported loss across elder fraud victims that year was $38,500. Here are a few habits to fine-tune your digital security this month:

🔐 Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere it's offered. Yes, it’s annoying, but according to a 2026 CISA report, using it makes an account roughly 99 percent less likely to be broken into. It only takes a minute to set up.

🔐 Give every account its own password. Reusing one password means one leaked login unlocks everything else. A password manager handles this without requiring you to remember dozens of them.

🔐 When you go to the dentist, put a reminder on your calendar to also change your passwords. Changing passwords often makes your accounts just that much harder to reach.

🔐 Pause before clicking. Phishing remains the most commonly reported cybercrime in the country, more than any other category the FBI tracks.

🔐 Check statements regularly, and turn on account alerts. Catching something small and wrong early is a lot easier to unwind than catching something large and wrong months later.

🔐 Consider freezing your credit if you're not actively applying for new credit or loans. This takes 15 minutes, one time.

None of this requires becoming a security expert. Pick the one or two that you've been putting off, and do it this week.

What's one financial decision you've made that helped you feel more prepared for your future?

For many of the people we work with, it's not a single investment or product; it's taking the time to create an overall strategy.

🗓️ October is Financial Planning Month—which is all about how the pieces of your financial picture fit together to help pursue your financial goals.

It's about putting together a comprehensive approach that manages your investments and retirement, provides for your loved ones—all while staying flexible enough to adjust as things change.

💡 If you've been meaning to update your strategy or to create one for the first time, it's never too late to start.

Some financial decisions get a second chance. A handful don't.

▪️ When you actually retire. In EBRI's 2026 Retirement Confidence Survey, 46 percent of retirees left the workforce earlier than they expected.

▪️ Stepping into a parent's finances. A 2026 Care.com report found sandwich-generation caregiving duties typically begin around age 34.

▪️ Receiving an inheritance. Ohio State research found nearly one in five people who inherited $100,000 or more had spent or lost the entire amount within two years.

▪️ Selling a business. For a typical owner, roughly 80 percent of their net worth is tied up in the business itself, per the Exit Planning Institute.

▪️ Writing (or updating) a will. Only 24 percent of Americans currently have a will, down from 33 percent in 2022, according to Caring.com.

None of these moments announce themselves on schedule. The families who handle them well are usually the ones who started talking years before circumstances forced their hand.

🏢 Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, marking the end of another chapter in one of the most closely watched leadership transitions in corporate America.

His son, Howard Buffett, has assumed the role of chairman, while Greg Abel continues as CEO. Warren Buffett will remain on Berkshire’s board as chairman emeritus and continue offering his perspective to the company.

The change completes a succession process that has been years in the making. Howard Buffett has served on Berkshire’s board for more than three decades, while Abel took over as CEO earlier this year.

📌 For Berkshire, the transition now shifts attention to how the company preserves its culture and long-term approach to running the business while operating under a new generation of leadership.

The legendary investor, whose son Howard succeeds him as chairman, will remain on the board and become chairman emeritus.

📌 Higher rates sting borrowers, but they can be a real win for savers.

As rates rise, banks may increase the yields they offer on savings products to attract deposits. The average U.S. savings account still pays just 0.64% annual percentage yield. Some high-yield accounts are paying more than six times that, up to 4.2%, for the exact same deposit.

🔎 Certificates of deposit, or CDs, can offer even higher rates, but the tradeoff is access: your money is locked in for a set term, and pulling it out early usually costs a penalty.

Higher yields don’t erase the effects of inflation, and they won’t necessarily transform household finances. But if your savings account is still earning close to that 0.64% average, that gap alone might be worth a second look.

The Federal Reserve recently raised interest rates for the first time since 2023.
