: Myth of the week: “If I don’t get a 1099, I don’t have to report the income.”
The IRS disagrees, strongly. That $600 threshold for issuing a 1099 is about when the payer has to report it, not about whether you owe tax on it. Cash job, Venmo payment, barter deal …if you earned it, it’s taxable, paperwork or not.

Keep your own records. The IRS doesn’t grade on the honor system, but they do notice when the math doesn’t add up.

: Quick one for anyone in a tip-based job: the IRS wants to know about tips over $20/month, and yes, that includes the cash your regulars slip you “off the books.” Spoiler: there’s no such thing as off the books when it comes to the IRS. They’ve heard every version of that story.
Report it to your employer by the 10th of the following month. It’s a two-minute habit that saves you a much longer conversation later.

🚨🚨Starting this week, we're kicking off a familiar series called . Each week we'll share a quick tax tip, a deadline you should have on your radar, or something in the news that actually affects your return.

To start things off: if you're self-employed or have income that doesn't have taxes withheld from it, September 15 is the deadline for your third quarter estimated tax payment. Missing it isn't just a formality. The IRS charges interest on underpayments, even if you catch up later in the year.

We'll be back next Tuesday with more. If you have a topic you'd like us to cover, let us know.

Waiting on your tax refund and wondering where it is? We get it—it’s always nice to know when to expect that check or direct deposit!

Here’s how you can track your federal or state refund:

1 Track Your Federal Refund:
---> Head over to the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact refund amount. The tool updates every 24 hours, so check back regularly for the latest status.

2 Track Your State Refund:
---> Each state has its own tracking system. Simply visit your state’s Department of Revenue or Taxation website and look for "Where’s My Refund?" You’ll need info such as: your SSN, filing status, and refund amount.

Remember, it can take a few weeks for your refund to process, so don’t worry if it’s not there yet! Need help or have questions? Many Happy Returns is here for you—just reach out!

Tax season is here, and so are the scammers! 🚨 Don’t fall for tax scams that promise big refunds, pressure you for personal info, or demand immediate payments.

Stay safe with these tips:

✅ If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Don’t trust random tax advice on social media.
✅ The IRS won’t threaten or demand payment—anyone who does is a scammer.
✅ Check website links carefully—only use IRS.gov for official info.

Protect yourself and your refund! Stay alert and always verify.
