The IRS extended tax relief for farmers and ranchers in 49 states and other regions affected by drought conditions between Sept.1, 2025 and Aug. 31, 2026.

The tax relief gives eligible farmers and ranchers more time to meet certain federal tax obligations when drought conditions force the sale of livestock.

Are you using a 2025 tax strategy in a 2026 tax environment?

It’s easy to repeat what worked last year. But several rules have changed, including provisions affecting charitable deductions, estate and gift planning, business deductions, SALT, and depreciation.

That doesn’t mean you need a completely new strategy. It does mean it's worth checking assumptions. https://langallancpa.com/new-tax-rules-could-affect-the-moves-you-make-before-year-end

This overview does a nice job of separating the changes from the bigger question: Which ones might affect your decisions?

Have these 2026 changes caused you to rethink anything you planned to do this year?

Have you started forecasting for 2027 yet?

A good time to start forecasting for 2027 is late Q3 into early Q4.

This gives you time to look at how 2026 is going, plan your cash flow, and set realistic goals and a budget before the new year. https://langallancpa.com/are-financial-forecasts-reliable

Q4 is here. Do you know these 4 numbers?

1. Are you profitable?
2. How much cash do you have?
3. How much do customers owe you?
4. What bills are coming due?

If you can’t answer all four, check your financial reports before Q4 begins, not at year end.

Your numbers can’t help you make better decisions if you don’t know what they’re telling you.

Which number are you watching most closely heading into Q4?

Being with a bigger accounting firm doesn’t always mean you’re getting more.

I’ve talked with business owners and CFOs who are paying higher fees but spending more time managing the relationship.

They’re explaining their business to new people. Waiting too long for answers. Or talking about tax planning after the decisions have already been made.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the firm is doing poor work. It may mean the relationship no longer fits the business.

If your company has grown or changed, it’s worth occasionally asking: "Is our accounting firm still giving us what we need?"

We created a short worksheet to help you evaluate that question. See how your CPA relationship measures up. https://langallancpa.com/is-your-accounting-firm-still-the-right-fit

Boo! I’ve been haunting the halls and rattling a few filing cabinets, and I noticed something spooky...

October tax deadlines are approaching. 👻 https://langallancpa.com/tax-calendar

Don’t let a missed deadline haunt you long after Halloween is over.

My ghostly advice?

🎃 Check what’s due.
👻 Gather your documents.
🕸️ Talk to your tax professional.
💀 File before the deadline.

Because penalties and interest - those are the kinds of ghosts that NEVER leave. 👻

Did you know: Pay statements are mandatory in many states even though they are typically not required under federal law.

Here are seven facts employers should know. https://sbshrs.adpinfo.com/blog/pay-statement-compliance-what-small-employers-need-to-know

Plus, these tips:
• Review your pay-statement practices regularly to help identify compliance risks, improve payroll transparency, and address issues before they become larger problems.

• As your workforce grows or expands into new jurisdictions, monitor changes in state and local requirements and ensure that your pay statements continue to meet applicable standards.

Is your college-age or high school child athlete earning money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL)?

If yes, they may be unprepared for the tax bill.

NIL deals have turned many athletes into small business owners, and the tax obligations often catch them off guard. And the income is not limited to cash. They are going to be taxed on merchandise, equipment, and any of those things that they receive.

Most NIL arrangements classify athletes as independent contractors rather than employees, so they receive a Form 1099 with no tax withheld.

The IRS also considers them a business owner. So, they’ll file a Schedule C on their tax return and report business income.

We recommend getting help before the first payment arrives, and well before you file your taxes.

If you hired contract employees this year, there are important Form W-9 they must complete before year end, including:
- Legal name or business name
- Federal tax classification
- Address
- Taxpayer Identification Number, such as an SSN or EIN

You’ll also want accurate records of how much you paid each contractor throughout the year so you can determine whether a 1099 is required.

Have questions about getting ready for 1099 season? Let us know. We can help.
