Remarriage is an exciting new chapter, but it also comes with important financial decisions that shouldn’t be overlooked.

In this article, I shared my perspective on how financial advisors can help clients navigate remarriage — not by telling them whether or not they should marry, but by creating an open, positive conversation about their financial lives.

Instead of cautioning a client not to remarry, I recommend a different approach:

“Host a meeting with the client and the would-be spouse. Frame it as a positive, get-acquainted chat.”

Talking openly about money, assets, debt, financial goals, children, estate planning and a prenuptial agreement can help couples build a stronger financial foundation for their future together.

I’m pleased to be featured in this MarketWatch article discussing the financial considerations of remarriage and why thoughtful financial planning matters when love and money come together.

Financial abuse can make separation far more complicated than simply saying, “Just leave.”

For someone experiencing financial abuse, taking steps toward separation can involve significant financial, emotional, and safety considerations.

In my recent conversation on the Dominate Law Podcast, we discuss why attorneys and support professionals need to help clients rebuild financial control, protect sensitive information, and prepare for unexpected changes.

These clients need more than legal advice. They need thoughtful planning and a professional team that understands the complexities of financial abuse.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have this important conversation and help bring greater awareness to an issue that can often remain hidden.

What happens when divorce professionals rethink their traditional roles?

I’m pleased to share a newly published, co-authored article in Family Court Review through Wiley Online Library: “The Evolving Team: Vulnerability and Trust in the Collaborative Divorce Process—A Roadmap for Professionals.”

The Collaborative Divorce Process asks attorneys, mental health professionals, and financial neutrals to move beyond traditional professional boundaries and work together in a fundamentally different way.

This article explores how trust, vulnerability, humility, and shared responsibility shape effective interdisciplinary teams—and how each professional’s role evolves throughout the process. From attorneys becoming process stewards, to mental health professionals serving as facilitators, and financial professionals acting as neutral educators, the strength of the model lies in how these roles come together.

The article also examines the importance of professional coordination, pre- and post-meeting reflection, navigating team challenges, and maintaining the integrity of the collaborative process.

Although rooted in Collaborative Divorce, these insights have broader implications for interdisciplinary family dispute resolution and the future of family justice.

💰 11 Financial Clues Your Spouse May Be Preparing for Divorce

After more than 25 years working on the financial aspects of more than 1,300 divorce cases, I’ve learned that spouses are rarely in sync when it comes to deciding to file for divorce. Often, one spouse has already begun preparing before the other realizes what is happening.

In my article for Money.com, I explore 11 financial clues that may indicate your spouse is preparing for a divorce, including:

🔹 Hiding money or unexplained missing funds
🔹 Stopping direct deposits into joint accounts
🔹 Making large cash withdrawals
🔹 Secretive credit card activity or changes in where financial mail is sent
🔹 Reducing contributions to savings or retirement accounts
🔹 Taking out unexpected loans
🔹 Sudden changes in spending or financial behavior
🔹 Unusual gifts, trips, or other unexpected financial activity

There can also be warning signs when your spouse suddenly becomes unusually negative about their income, career, business prospects, bonuses, or future earning potential.

Divorce can have win-lose, win-win, or lose-lose outcomes. Preparation helps your case. The earlier you recognize that divorce may be imminent, the better positioned you can be to understand your finances and prepare for what comes next.

If you’re concerned about changes in your spouse’s financial behavior, don’t ignore the warning signs. Get informed, organize your financial records, and understand your financial picture.

💰 What if you think your spouse is hiding money or assets, delaying the discovery process, or not reporting their real income?

During divorce, financial transparency is critical.

In this video, I discuss:
🔎 Why you might have reason to be suspicious
💵 What types of assets or income may warrant closer examination
📋 How to obtain the financial information you need
👩‍💼 Who you may need to hire to uncover what is hidden
🌎 What to consider when assets may be held overseas
⚖️ How to weigh the potential financial benefit against the cost of investigating

The first question I recommend asking is: Why do I have reason to be suspicious?

From there, you can determine what you're looking for, how to find the information, and whether pursuing the investigation makes financial sense.

I cover methods for identifying and uncovering hidden assets, lost or hidden income, and the professionals who may be able to help in my book, Money & Divorce: The Essential Roadmap to Mastering Financial Decisions.
https://wealthprotectionmanagement.com/the-book/

Sometimes, you simply have to follow the money to your satisfaction — and I can help you determine whether it's worth it.

💰 Financial Infidelity: How Can You Protect Yourself?

I’ve seen how financial deception can create serious challenges in a relationship — whether you’re just beginning a relationship, have been married for decades, or are navigating a divorce.

Financial infidelity can take many forms, including hidden accounts, secret spending, undisclosed debt, unusual withdrawals, or financial decisions made without your knowledge. The warning signs aren’t always obvious, and the longer financial misconduct continues, the more difficult it can be to uncover and address.

In my article, “Financial Infidelity – How To Protect Yourself?”, I discuss:

🔹 What financial infidelity looks like
🔹 Common warning signs of hidden finances and financial deception
🔹 How financial infidelity can affect a marriage and contribute to divorce
🔹 Steps you can take to protect your assets
🔹 Why monitoring joint accounts and financial records is so important
🔹 How being proactive can help protect your long-term financial future

When it comes to your finances, ignorance is not protection. I encourage everyone to understand their financial situation, stay informed, monitor their accounts, and take an active role in managing their wealth.

Your financial future matters — and protecting it starts with being informed.

I recently joined Kaplan Financial Education to discuss an important and often overlooked topic in divorce cases: alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and how it can help parties resolve financial issues outside of traditional litigation.

In this conversation, I break down the different ADR options available, why they are becoming increasingly common, and how they can often lead to more efficient, cost-effective, and less adversarial outcomes for families navigating divorce.

If you're an accountant, financial professional, or someone involved in divorce financial planning, understanding ADR can be a powerful tool in guiding better client outcomes.

I was honored to be quoted in Moneywise recently, where I shared my expertise on divorce and the steps individuals can take to safeguard their financial future during challenging transitions.

In this shocking article by Laura Grande, we explore a difficult reality many people face: discovering hidden debt, losing financial security, and trying to rebuild after years of shared financial decisions.

One of the most important steps is taking control of your own financial well-being.

As I shared with Moneywise:
“Separate all financial accounts as much as possible and do not share access to them.”

Protecting yourself financially may include:
✔️ Separating and securing accounts
✔️ Understanding your complete financial picture — assets, income, expenses, and debt
✔️ Gathering important financial documents
✔️ Monitoring credit and shared accounts
✔️ Creating a roadmap for your financial future

Financial challenges can be overwhelming, especially during divorce. But knowledge, preparation, and the right professional guidance can help you move forward with greater confidence and clarity.
