With the potential impacts of Winter Storm Fern in our area, we are uncertain about utility and operational capacity for early to mid-next week. We will monitor the weather and provide updates by Monday morning to the best of our ability regarding our ability to operate.
Even if Waterford, as a whole, remains operational, some team members may be unable to come in. To ensure support at the beginning of the week, please make sure to copy both your bookkeeper and advisor on communications so that at least one team member is available to assist you.

🚨 1099 DEADLINE REMINDER – JANUARY 31 🚨
We know we’ve posted about 1099s before, but this is too important to ignore. The IRS imposes significant fines for failing to issue required 1099s, and mistakes are common.
Who needs a 1099?
In general, any vendor or contractor who:
✔️ Provided services
✔️ Was paid $600 or more during the year
Always requires a 1099:
▪️ Legal services (even S-Corps & C-Corps)
▪️ Rent payments (Form 1099-MISC)
▪️ Independent contractors (Form 1099-NEC)
Who typically does NOT receive a 1099:
▪️ S-Corporations
▪️ C-Corporations
(Confirm with a signed W-9)
📄 Why W-9s matter:
A W-9 tells you whether a vendor needs a 1099 and provides their correct EIN/SSN and address. If a vendor refuses to provide one, you still must file—documentation is key.
⏰ Deadline: January 31
Don’t wait until the last minute.

As the year comes to a close, many people start thinking about the holidays—but smart taxpayers are also thinking ahead to tax season.
One of the most common sources of confusion we see each year is the difference between tax deductions and tax credits. While they sound similar, they affect your tax bill in very different ways. Deductions reduce taxable income, while credits directly reduce the amount of tax you owe—dollar for dollar.
Understanding how each works, knowing what qualifies, and planning early can help prevent unpleasant surprises when filing season begins. December is one of the best times to get organized, review your financial position, and identify opportunities that may reduce your overall tax liability.
We break it all down in our latest blog and video, including:
• Common deduction mistakes business owners make
• Why credits are often more valuable than deductions
• How early planning can reduce stress and errors
• Why documentation matters if the IRS asks questions

What if your financial statements are WRONG? 🤯
If you grabbed a multimeter to diagnose an HVAC system and everything looked fine, but the customer said it wasn’t working — would you just shrug and leave? Of course not. You’d dig deeper to get to the REAL issue.
👉 The same is true for your business finances.
You can’t make good decisions if your financial statements aren’t accurate. Period.
Here are the 4 key reports every business owner should be reviewing monthly:
✅ Accounts Receivable (A/R)
Who owes you money, how long they’ve owed it, and whether you’ll actually collect it. Don’t let invoices sit in the 90+ day danger zone.
✅ Accounts Payable (A/P)
What YOU owe to vendors. Staying on top of this protects cash flow, avoids late fees, and keeps vendor relationships strong.
✅ Profit & Loss (P&L)
Your business’s financial heartbeat. It shows your real income, expenses, profitability, and even determines your tax liability.
✅ Balance Sheet
Your snapshot of assets, debt, loans, credit cards, and overall financial health. If this is off, EVERYTHING is off.
BONUS: Cash Flow Statement
Think of this as the truth serum for your business. It shows where money is coming from, where it’s going, and whether you’re truly building equity or digging a hole.
📌 If even ONE of these reports is inaccurate, your decisions, budgeting, taxes, forecasts, and growth strategy can go completely sideways.
Bottom line: Organized bookkeeping = accurate reports = better decisions = a more profitable and stable business.
