“We don't have an R&D department.”

That's one reason businesses may assume the R&D tax credit doesn't apply to them. But the IRS looks at the work being performed, not what your org chart calls the team.

Qualified research can involve developing or improving a product, process, computer software, technique, formula, or invention through the required process of experimentation.

If your team spent time this year testing alternatives, resolving technical uncertainty, or working to improve how something functions, performs, or operates, some of that work may qualify.

Not sure if yours does? That's what a free assessment is for: https://hubs.li/Q04yJ5GN0

One of the biggest misconceptions about Cost Segregation is that it creates new tax deductions.

It doesn't. A Cost Segregation Study identifies qualifying assets that may be depreciated over shorter recovery periods under IRS guidelines. The deductions already exist.

The study helps classify those assets correctly.
Understanding the distinction is key to making informed tax planning decisions.

If your commercial building has had a lighting, HVAC, or envelope upgrade, here's a deduction worth knowing about.

Section §179D is a federal tax deduction for owners of commercial buildings who install energy-efficient systems. It's calculated per square foot of qualifying space, and it exists specifically to reward buildings that use less energy.

Most owners never claim it, simply because nobody flagged it as an option.

If your building has been upgraded in the past few years, it's worth five minutes to check.

Think your company doesn't qualify for the R&D tax credit? You may want to take another look.

No research lab? A failed project? A small business? Work that feels like part of the regular job? Using a third-party software tool?

None of these factors automatically means your work is disqualified.

What matters is whether the underlying activities meet the requirements for the R&D tax credit.

We break down five common misconceptions and what businesses should actually look at when determining whether their work may qualify.

You don't have to own a skyscraper to qualify for 179D. Here's what people usually get wrong.

"It's only for new construction." Nope, renovations and retrofits count too.

• "My building isn't big enough": There's no minimum square footage requirement.

• "Only the owner can claim it": Architects and engineers who design energy efficient government or nonprofit buildings can claim it too, through an allocation letter from the building owner.

A lot of eligible buildings never get a second look because someone assumed they didn't qualify.

The firms that bring specialty tax credits to their clients are the ones clients don't leave.

When a client finds out someone else uncovered a six figure R&D credit or a six figure §179D deduction that their own CPA never mentioned, that's a hard conversation to have on your side of the table.

We work alongside CPA firms across the country on §179D, cost segregation and R&D tax credits, so you can be the one bringing the win to your client instead of hearing about it after the fact. You keep the relationship. We do the technical heavy lifting.
