Find the Cash Hiding in Your Business

Your P&L says you’re profitable. Your bank balance says otherwise.

For contractors, the difference may be sitting in underbillings, retainage, slow collections, unapproved change orders, or poorly timed payments.

Before year-end, ask: Where is our cash getting stuck?

That question can be more useful than, “How much profit did we make?”

Your parents may need help with their finances. But they still need you to be their son or daughter.

When adult children take on paying bills, organizing records, chasing down insurance paperwork, and tracking financial deadlines, the relationship can start to change.

Every conversation shouldn't have to begin with: "Did you pay that bill?"

Daily Money Management can add another layer of support, helping aging parents stay organized while letting their children spend less time on paperwork and more time simply being family.

That's a benefit that's hard to put on a spreadsheet.

A Tax Reminder From the Goblin Department

Goblins love chaos.

Messy desks. Missing receipts. Mysterious spreadsheets. Expense reports nobody can explain.

But even they don’t mess around with October tax deadlines. 🎃

Before you head off to hoard candy and cause general mischief:
• Check your October filing deadlines.
• Gather any missing documents.
• Make sure extensions are ready to be filed.
• Ask your tax professional if anything is still lurking on your to-do list.

Because nothing ruins a perfectly good month of goblin mischief like a tax penalty.

Stay spooky. File on time.

Backlog Isn’t the Same as Profit

A $30 million backlog looks great on paper.

But how much of it is good backlog?

Before year-end, look beyond the total:
• Which jobs are meeting margin expectations?
• Where is margin fading?
• Which projects are tying up working capital?
• Are upcoming jobs priced for today’s labor and material costs?

More work isn’t always the goal. Better work is.

When was the last time you talked with your accountant about something other than taxes?

An accountant who understands the business behind the return can bring far more value to the relationship.

Your financial team should know where you've been.

They should also know where you're trying to go.

Where are you trying to go?

Sometimes the smartest question an owner can ask isn’t “Is this working?”

The way you priced jobs five years ago may not reflect today’s costs.

The reporting that worked at $5 million may not work at $25 million.

The person who handled everything when you had 15 employees may be overwhelmed at 60.

The entity structure, insurance, financing or succession plan that once made sense may deserve another look.

Growth changes the business.

Your financial strategy should change with it.

Your books can be 100% accurate and still not be very useful.

Accurate bookkeeping tells you what happened.

Useful bookkeeping helps you understand:
• Why did profit change?
• Where is spending increasing?
• Which expenses are growing faster than revenue?
• Are margins improving or slipping?
• What needs attention before next month?

Closing the books shouldn’t be the finish line. It should be the beginning of the conversation.

My son has gone away to college this fall and luckily got a scholarship. Does this mean he’s no longer my dependent?

A student who is under age 24 at the end of the year can still qualify as your child for tax purposes if they were a full-time student for at least five months during the year.

The student must also meet the relationship and residency requirements. https://www.hrblock.com/tax-center/filing/dependents/college-age-dependents-and-financial-support

There is more to consider before you or he file taxes next year. Reach out to chat about this before filing.

Construction leaders need numbers that answer: What’s happening next?

That means looking beyond last month’s revenue and profit.

Think about upcoming commitments, backlog mix, labor needs, debt obligations, customer concentration, bidding activity and projected margins.

Historical reporting is valuable.

Forward-looking financial management is what helps an owner decide whether to hire, borrow, expand, bid more aggressively or hold the line.

The larger the company becomes, the more expensive it is to manage by looking in the rearview mirror.

You don't need to manage it alone. Call us.
