Here is a simple way to tell the difference between tax preparation and proactive tax planning.
Ask yourself:
Did my CPA meet with me before year-end? Did we project my income and expected tax liability? Did we discuss what I could still change before December 31? Did we review the cash-flow impact of those decisions? Did I leave with specific action items?
If the first time you hear what you owe is when the tax return is being prepared, that is usually tax preparation.
That does not necessarily mean the CPA did anything wrong. Tax preparation and proactive tax planning are simply different services.
One useful question to ask is: "Based on where I am projected to end the year, what should I be evaluating before year-end?"
The answer should be specific to your situation, not a generic list of deductions.
