📢 California Businesses: A Major Sales Tax Change Is Coming in 2027

California's new digital sales tax law, SB 122, is set to expand sales tax to many digital products beginning January 1, 2027.

So, what does this mean for businesses?

💻 Software and SaaS subscriptions: Many digital products, including qualifying off-the-shelf software and cloud-based applications, may become subject to California sales tax.

🛒 Businesses selling digital products: Companies should review their products, invoicing systems, and sales tax collection procedures to determine whether changes are needed.

📋 Exemptions still matter: Not every digital product or service will be taxable. Custom software, certain service transactions, and qualifying purchases for resale or out-of-state use may receive different treatment depending on the circumstances.

✅ What should businesses do now?
• Review software subscriptions and digital product purchases.
• Evaluate how the law may affect sales and customer billing.
• Confirm sales tax registration and collection requirements.
• Monitor additional guidance from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).
