Tomorrow, October 10th is our Fall Household Hazardous Waste Event! We love seeing you, our neighbors, and we love seeing your dogs, too. Besides us, here are 5 reasons to bring your dog...

1.) Dogs sniff out the importance of properly disposing of herbicides, pesticides, and poisons.

2.) Dogs bark at brake fluid, lighter fluid, and gasoline when it's in the trash, so quiet them down by bringing those with you.

3.) Dogs fetch balls, but they don't fetch mothballs; you can dispose of them at tomorrow’s event.

4.) Dogs might swim in your pool, but they paddle away from disposing of pool chemicals in your trash...So instead, bring them to us.

5.) We'll do our best to have a treat waiting for them.

That simple! Find a full list on our website: FrederickCountyMd-dot-gov/HHW

See you tomorrow at the Keys Stadium parking lot (21 Stadium Drive), 8 AM till Noon! Remember: no walk-ups and no left turns into the event!

Earlier this week, we made a "Whoopsie," and we wanted to issue a correction:

In our October 6th post, we altered an image from Gener8ion and Yung Lean's viral music video for their song "Storm II"; however, we parodied the lyrics from Gener8ion and Yung Lean's song "Storm"...

We are sorry to anyone who was offended by this error, and to the keen-eyed Gen Alpha person who said, "Wow, this is cringe, Unc"; we say, Thanks, Bruh.

However, no matter the error, the message remains: we accept empty plastic bottles, whether they're crinklier than others or a different color. If the neck narrows, it's a bottle, and we'll take it in our blue bin, and it will be recycled.

And folks, we see

Your love

Your fears

And you fill

the bins

With your Materials.

The Magna Carta sets a rarely used precedent: for every 30 goofy public displays, thou must do a boring display. That's why we're bringing you this boring but important post about unhealthy vs. healthy rechargeable batteries.

Knowing whether you are dealing with a healthy or unhealthy battery can make a big difference in how you dispose of it once you no longer want it. A battery's health isn't about whether it works; it's about how it looks.

A "healthy" battery shows no signs of damage, smells, or heat; if it's just now basically a paperweight, you may be using it as such. Most big-box stores and drop-off locations accept these rechargeable batteries with little to no worry about fire. However, these batteries should still NEVER go in a trash or recycling bin, and their terminals should be taped.

Why? Because a healthy battery can turn unhealthy really quick. A simple drop or crushing pressure can damage a battery. A damaged battery is more prone to thermal runaway because of chemical reactions inside the cells. Elements mix that shouldn't, which can cause the battery to expand.

Introducing oxygen or a spark can trigger thermal runaway, which can quickly cause a fire, raising temperatures from room temperature to 1800 degrees in moments.

When disposing of these unhealthy batteries, only a few places will take them, either our Reichs Ford Road recycling center drop-off or Battery One on South Street. Tape the terminals and avoid applying pressure. If possible, put it in a metal bucket and keep it outside.

If the battery feels hot to the touch, starts to smell, or smokes, call 9-1-1 right away.

While knowing the difference between the two is boring, it's incredibly important, as it could help you prevent fires both in your home and in our solid waste stream.

Saturday is our Fall Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event!
At our spring event, we processed a car every 15 seconds, but lines were still a little long (ok, very long).

There were two big frustrations:
1. Waiting in line to find out some items weren't accepted. Common items that we actually take all year include: Motor Oil, Cooking Oil, Lead-Acid Batteries, Antifreeze, Textiles, and Diesel Fuel.

2. They were hangry.
So what are the best snacks to bring on the 10th, just in case you get stuck in line?
Turkey Legs: Delicious, handheld, lots of protein; you can gnaw on the bone if you get frustrated.
Trail Mix: Perfect balance of sweet and salty, shareable, and you can toss it in your mouth to pass the time.
Rice Krispy Treats: Delicious, sticky, and perfect to pass out the window.
Breakfast Burritos: Compact, flavor-packed, handheld, and you can make a bunch of different flavors.

Join us Saturday at Harry Grove Stadium with your snacks and your patience. We start as close to 8AM as possible and close the line at noon. If you're in line by then, we will make sure you're served.

It's been three long years since the last residential scrap tire event...We have some good news!

Thanks to the Maryland Environmental Service and Maryland Dept. Of The Environment, we will host a week-long Frederick County: Residential Scrap Tire Drop Off Event!

October 24th through the 31st will allow Frederick County residents with a valid driver's license to drop off 10 tires that are 33 inches and under at no cost.

There is a tonnage limit, so we strongly encourage you to come earlier in the week because once that tonnage is reached, the event ends.

And while this event is for residential customers only, we will soon announce an Agriculture tire event!

Li-Ions can roar quickly. An unhealthy rechargeable battery can reach temperatures over 1800 degrees in just a second!

Here’s the burn point for most items you find in your trash and recycling:

Plastics: 250 to 750
Paper: 451
Aluminum: 1220
Tin: 449
Glass bottle: 1600

While that energy to maintain those temps may not last; fires ignite and spread quickly in our waste stream.

This fire prevention week, tame the Li-Ions by properly disposing batteries. Take advantage of our partnership with FCDFRS for curbside pick ups!

You got a Recycle wish
Got a Recycle wish
Someone said
Someone said, "Hey, you got a recycle wish"
It's on our yes list
It's a bottle; it's not on the denylist
Or the Forbes list
Put it over my lip
I'll take another one

Empty plastic bottles can be recycled, no matter if they feel like a weaker plastic or are clear, green, orange, or whatever, as long as they are a bottle which means the item comes to a narrow neck and is empty; then yep, yep, yep, we'll recycle it.

Reference explainer: Hi, you didn't get the post, and it's fine. Right now there's a popular social media trend based around the song "Storm" by an artist named Gener8ion and Yung Lean...Crazy, we know. Anywho...Don't worry about that; recycle plastic bottles. These kids these days, are we right?.

Time to dump a myth and unclutch some pearls!

The syringe you see in your neighborhood doesn't always mean illegal drug use has taken place. In fact, you may be seeing more syringes on the streets because we are seeing more syringes in our waste stream.

Why? GLP-1 and other injectable medicines are rising. In fact, GLP usage has gone from 6% to 11% in just the last few years, and compounding pharmacies are becoming part of that equation, as they often use syringes rather than pens.

All that to say that loose syringes don't mean they were used for illegal drugs; more than likely, someone didn't dispose of them properly. So how do you dispose of it?

Put syringes in a "Sharps" container, or a heavy plastic bottle such as a detergent bottle. Once the bottle or container is full, duct-tape the cap and write "Sharps" clearly on the container.

Then, throw it in your TRASH.

Syringe "pens" should also follow this same advice.

It's that simple, yet there's still a lot of stigma around syringe use, which leads to improper disposal. But the good news is, there's a simple, effective way to get sharps out of your house and properly disposed of.
