🚨 BUSINESS OWNERS — DON'T FALL FOR THE FANCY LETTERHEAD! 🚨

Oh, look! Another official-looking letter telling a new business owner they need to pay for something. 🙄

One of our clients recently received this beauty shortly after starting their business.

The funny part? We had already helped them with their Sunbiz registration, EIN application, and the administrative steps to get their business up and running.

But apparently, someone else thinks they need to pay MORE money. 💸

These letters come dressed up with government-looking seals, barcodes, scary warnings, phrases like “REQUIRED BY LAW,” and deadlines designed to make you panic and pull out your credit card.

Not so fast! ✋

💡 A few things business owners should know:

✅ EIN (Federal Tax ID): FREE through the IRS. Yes, FREE. As in $0.

✅ Business Registration: Most states allow you to register directly online through their Secretary of State or appropriate state agency. You'll pay the legitimate filing fees without unnecessary third-party markups.

✅ Certificates of Status/Good Standing: Legitimate documents, but not something every business automatically needs. You can generally obtain them directly from your state for a small fee.

✅ Labor Law Posters: Many required workplace posters are available FREE from government agencies. No fancy package necessary!

⚠️ And here's where it gets interesting...

Some of these companies technically provide legitimate services. But charging hefty fees for something you could obtain yourself for FREE or a fraction of the cost? All while making the letter look like an official government requirement?

We'll just leave that right there. 👀

And trust us, this isn't the only type of letter out there. There are plenty of others targeting business owners, particularly those who have just registered a new business.

I keep thinking about the Good Good x Callaway ad.

Not even the ad itself anymore.

I keep wondering about the rooms it went through.

Did someone say, “Guys… maybe not” and get ignored?

Did someone see the problem but stay quiet because everyone else at the table seemed so confident?

Did the newest person in the room think, surely these people know better than I do?

Or had they built a room where questioning the idea simply wasn’t encouraged?

Because two successful companies had to pitch, review, discuss and ultimately approve this.

And there’s a lesson in that beyond advertising.

Speak up.

If something doesn’t sit right, say it.

Ask the uncomfortable question. Challenge the popular opinion. Break the mold.

And if you’re consistently sitting at a table where you’re afraid to speak—or where you speak and no one is willing to listen—

Maybe that’s your sign to leave the table and build your own.

Sometimes imposter syndrome tells us everyone else in the room must know better.

Sometimes they don’t.

And sometimes the person quietly thinking “Guys… maybe not” is exactly the person the room needs.
