What if part of the tax gap isn't about fraudābut about business owners simply not claiming deductions they're entitled to?
The IRS reports a $496 billion tax gap every year, and one reason businesses may contribute to that gap is missed deductions caused by uncertainty or poor recordkeeping.
Business software, training, mileage, bank fees, and certain business-use portions of your phone and internet may have deduction potential when they qualify as legitimate business expenses.
The key is knowing the rules and keeping the right records.

Did you know the origins of the federal income tax are connected to the Civil War?
In 1862, the federal government needed additional revenue to help finance the war. Congress responded by creating the Office of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue and implementing an income tax.
That early income tax was eventually repealed, but federal income taxation returned in 1913 with the ratification of the 16th Amendment.
Today, taxes are part of everyday business and financial decisions.
The lesson? Taxes aren't simply a billāthey're a system of rules.
The better you understand those rules, the better positioned you are to make informed decisions and legally reduce your tax burden.
