Zach and I loved each other the whole time we were fighting about money.

That was never the problem.

The problem was that we were facing each other, keeping score. Your spending. My spending. Who forgot the bill. Who swiped the card. Every money conversation felt like it was me against him.

What changed everything wasn't loving each other more. It was turning around and facing the same direction. Same goal. Same plan. Same side of the table.

Once we did that, the debt stopped being something we fought about and became something we fought together.

If money conversations in your house feel like a face-off right now, that doesn't mean your marriage is broken. It might just mean you haven't turned around yet.

Start small this week. Sit next to each other, not across from each other, and ask: "Where do we want to be a year from now?"

That's where it starts. đź’›

You can say it’s working fine all you want, but are you truly working together? Separate accounts might pay the bills, but they can also create an unspoken barrier in your relationship. Let’s talk about building a future together.

You are not the sum of your money mistakes.

Money mistakes are rarely a math problem. They are the result of childhood habits or emotional reactions you haven’t talked through yet. When you slip up, it is easy to let shame take over, but that guilt only keeps you repeating the same patterns.

You have to separate who you are from your past choices.

Here is how we shift that mindset:

1. Remove the shame. A mistake is not a character flaw. It is data.
2. Find the takeaway. What can you learn from what happened? Failures are actually good because they are exactly how we learn to do better.
3. Move toward the future. Your identity is not the mistake itself. Your identity is what you do next and how you choose to respond.

When you are a team, you use these moments to reach a shared understanding. You don’t blame each other for what went wrong; you work together on the same goal.

Stop looking back at the negative things. Take the lesson, leave the guilt behind, and focus on the life you are building together. How you handle the recovery is who you really are.

What is one thing a past money mishap taught you?

Everyone’s AI “mascot” picture this week: a cute little dog.

Mine? An otter of all things.

Which is hilarious, because I literally breed and show dogs. Dogs are my whole personality outside of finances. And the one time it counts, I get passed over for Finley here.

But honestly, he grew on me. Otters hold hands while they sleep so they don’t drift apart, and that’s pretty much what I want for every couple I work with: holding on to each other, even when money gets rough.

So Finley stays. My dogs have been informed. They are not happy about it.

Big dreams. Real plans. And apparently an otter now.

What would YOUR mascot be? AI prompt is in the comments!

When my daughter asked me if her daddy and I were ever going to get divorced, I was crushed. I don’t ever want my girls to experience divorce.

In my coaching, I use money as the tool to bring you together in your relationship. Money problems and money fights are a major cause of divorce. So by improving your money and your communication around it, I am able to help you improve your marriage.

Trying to fix your finances alone can feel daunting.

You start with so much energy. You print the budget, you swear off the takeout, and you promise this month will be the one where the numbers finally behave.

You actually start making progress! You begin to pay down debt, and you’re starting to feel better. But then the car needs a new battery, the water bill comes back higher than you expected, or you just get tired of working so hard... Suddenly, that initial spark of motivation vanishes, and you’re left standing in the kitchen wondering why this seems so heavy.

Most couples fail not because they lack heart, but because they lose momentum the moment they hit a roadblock. It’s hard to stay focused when you’re the only ones in your circle trying to live differently.

I built a space where you don’t have to carry that weight by yourselves. It’s a place to get the blueprint you’ve been missing and the encouragement to keep moving when the path gets steep. You get the structure and the community support to stay on track, without the cost of private coaching.

We call it The Debt-Free Collective. It’s how you move from being stuck to finally acting like a team with a solid roadmap.

Hiding a shopping bag in the trunk or deleting a confirmation email might feel like a small move to avoid an argument, but it carries a heavy price.

When you start being sneaky about what you’re spending, you aren’t just buying an item, you’re buying shame. That guilt acts like a slow-growing wedge between you and your partner. It’s hard to feel like a team when you’re keeping secrets to protect yourself from judgment.

True peace comes when you stop running two separate financial lives under one roof. When you get on the same page, the need to hide disappears because the plan is something you both built together. You don’t need permission; you just need a shared vision.

Let’s break the cycle of financial secrets.

What is the last thing you bought that you felt like you had to hide from your spouse?
