Five questions to answer before December 31. Swipe through.

If you can answer all five with a number, you're in good shape for year-end. If two or more make you wince, that's normal, and there's still time.

Most of the moves that lower a tax bill have to happen inside the calendar year. That window is open for about ten more weeks.

A lot of accounting firms run on a hamster wheel. Slammed from January to April, buried in extensions until today, then quiet until it starts all over again.

That calendar works for the firm. It doesn't work for you. Your business doesn't stop in May, and the decisions that shape your tax bill don't get made in April.

We built Passageway to work all twelve months. Books reconciled on a set schedule. Quarterly tax planning meetings on our Silver and Gold packages. Questions answered in the client portal as they come up, not saved for next spring.

Today is the last big filing deadline of the year. For our clients, it's just a Thursday.

Tomorrow, October 15, is the deadline for extended personal returns.

If yours is filed, nothing is due from you this week. The next decisions that matter are the year-end ones, and there are about eleven weeks left to make them.

If yours isn't filed and you're still waiting on a K-1 from your business return, don't wait quietly. Ask whoever prepares the business return where it stands today, not tomorrow afternoon.

And if you'd rather next October were just another Wednesday: passagewayfinancial.com/get-started

Q3 closed on September 30. For most owners, that's the last full quarter of numbers you'll have before the year ends.

It's worth an hour this month, because three questions decide what the rest of your year looks like:

1. Is profit tracking ahead of last year, behind it, or about even?
2. Have your estimated tax payments kept up with the profit you're actually making?
3. What does the fourth quarter usually look like for your business: a strong finish or a slow one?

Those three answers are most of a year-end tax projection. With them, you know roughly what your return will say before December 31, while there's still time to change it.

That's what October looks like for our Silver and Gold clients: Q3 reviewed, a projection in hand, and a plan for the last quarter.

Shawn started with zero employees. Now there are ten.

That growth was Shawn's work. Our part was the back office behind it: getting the banking set up right, planning ahead for taxes, and keeping the books clean enough to trust at every step.

That's the job, the way we see it. Keep the numbers one step ahead of the business, so the owner never has to slow down and wait for them to catch up.

Every subcontractor you paid this year may need a 1099 from you by the end of January. You can't send one without their W-9.

In January, that means messaging a drywaller you used once in March and waiting on a reply that never comes.

In October, it's a ten-minute job:

1. Pull every vendor you paid this year from your books or bank feed.
2. Flag the individuals and small LLCs, not the supply houses.
3. Check which ones you already have a W-9 for.
4. Request the rest now, while the work is still fresh in everyone's mind.

Our clients don't build this list themselves. It's part of how we close out the year with them.

Most people are told to build wealth one way. Put money in the market, maybe buy a rental, wait.

Those are fine. They're singles and doubles.

The business you already own is the one investment you actually control. You set the price. You decide who to hire and which work to take on. Every dollar of margin you add to it is yours to keep building with.

That's why we care so much about the unglamorous parts. Clean books show you where the money is really coming from. A tax plan keeps more of it in the business. Payroll that runs on its own gives you your evenings back.

The books are the scoreboard. The business is the home run.

Three months left in the year. The moves that lower your bill only work while the calendar is open.

Equipment timing, retirement contributions, owner pay, how the entity is set up: every one of them is a before-December-31 decision. After that, we're filing a story that's already been written.

Two places to start, depending on where you are.

Curious what monthly work costs: the pricing calculator is right on the site, no call required. passagewayfinancial.com

9pm. You told yourself twenty minutes.

Match the receipts to the bank feed, that's all. Except forty of them are in the truck, a few went through the wash in a jacket pocket, and one is a photo of a photo. Then there's a charge in the feed from a vendor you'd swear you have never used.

It's 10:40 now. You have a 6am start.

Nobody warned you about this part when you started the business. It's also the part we take off your desk completely: somebody else matches the receipts, and you go to bed.

Extended personal returns are due October 15. If you own a business, that date depends on a document you don't control.

Your 1040 is waiting on your K-1. The K-1 comes out of the business return. So the sequence is the whole game: business return finished, K-1 issued, personal return filed.

Break the sequence anywhere and October gets uncomfortable.
