A quick reminder for individuals: The October 15 tax extension deadline is quickly approaching.

If you filed for an extension in April, this is your final date to submit your completed Form 1040 to the IRS. Please note that while an extension gives you more time to file your paperwork, it did not extend the time to pay any taxes owed.

Take some time this week to review your tax documents, connect with your CPA, and finalize your return to avoid unnecessary failure-to-file penalties.

Patterson, Prince & Associates would like to welcome Sophia Thompson to the team!

“Having split her time between Pittsburgh, PA and Florence, AL, Sophia Thompson returned to the Shoals in 2021 to attend the University of North Alabama (UNA). She graduated magna cm laude in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in English and a minor in Mathematics.

Presently, she is working on her Master of Business Administration at UNA and concentrating in Accounting. She intends on obtaining her CPA license. To gain practical experience, she began working at Patterson, Prince, and Associates as an office assistant in September 2026.

In her free time, she enjoys any activity involving Lake Wilson—sailing, boating, fishing, and wakeboarding are some of her favorites.”

William McMurtrey is a Florence native and accounting professional who began his public accounting career in 2021. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of North Alabama in 2020 and an MBA with a concentration in Accounting in 2023. William obtained his Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential in 2023 and became a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 2026.

William is engaged to his fiancé Hannah, and the two have a golden retriever named Baxter who they love to spend time with.

Meet our Board: Roger Williams

We are proud to highlight Roger Williams, Chair Elect of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce.

Roger is a graduate of Deshler High School and Birmingham Southern College. He began his career as an Audit Associate with a regional CPA firm in Birmingham, Alabama, where he spent more than eight years and advanced to Audit Manager. In that role, he provided audit and assurance services to a broad portfolio of clients.

He returned to the Shoals in 2018 to join Patterson, Prince and Associates, P.C., Certified Public Accountants and was previously recognized as a 2017 Rising Star of Accounting by the Birmingham Business Journal. Roger is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants.

He serves on the executive board of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce and Shoals Habitat for Humanity, where he serves as finance chair. He also serves as President of Alabama Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Beyond his board and professional service, Roger is actively involved in community outreach. He was named Big Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Shoals in 2023 and recognized as Businessman of the Year by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 2024. He is a graduate of Leadership Shoals and the State of Alabama Leadership Initiative Program.

Roger and his wife Briana have two children, Zoey and Connor.
