Have a question about the economy? We're bringing it to Ben Harris.

Later this month, our CEO Dave Greene is sitting down again with Ben Harris, Vice President and Director of Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution and former Chief Economist at the U.S. Treasury. You've probably seen Ben on CNBC and CNN breaking down what's happening in the economy and what it means for everyday Americans.

This time, we want your questions to drive the conversation.

What's on your mind? Interest rates, inflation, tariffs, the housing market, Social Security, the national debt, or whatever is keeping you up at night. Ben will open with a quick macro update, and then we'll put your top questions to him.

Q3 delivered the strongest earnings growth in five years, and the market barely moved.

The S&P 500 finished the quarter up about 2%, the Nasdaq about 2.5%, and bonds fell 3.5%. Interest rates were the reason. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to about 5.3% in September, and the Fed raised rates for the first time since 2023.

Swipe through for what happened, how we're adjusting bond portfolios, and what we're watching heading into the midterms. The full video update with Parker Trasborg and Kevin Donovan is linked in the comments.

Most people sign their estate plan once and file it away. Life doesn't stand still, though, even when the paperwork does.

Adam Abramowitz, an attorney we work with, puts it well: what you wanted when you signed isn't necessarily what you want today, a year from now, or twenty years down the road.

A few things that quietly go out of date without anyone noticing:

– The guardian you picked for your kids back when they were young. Maybe that person isn't around anymore, or your thinking has simply evolved.

– Your power of attorney or medical directive. The person you named may no longer be the right person to make important financial or medical decisions on your behalf.

– Any significant life changes. If you've moved, gotten married, divorced, welcomed another child or grandchild, retired, or simply built more than you had when you signed your documents, any one of those is a good reason to take another look.

– The tax rules. The federal estate tax exemption, for example, increased from $13.99 million in 2025 to $15 million in 2026. Changes like this can affect how your estate is taxed and whether the strategies in your current plan still make sense.

You don't need to start from scratch. Just let us take a look with you.

Reach out to your CJM adviser whenever it's convenient. We'll walk through it together and tell you honestly whether anything needs updating.

It's National Coffee Day! ☕

As we're sipping our coffee this morning, we're reflecting on the many relationships we’ve built with our clients that started with a simple cup of coffee.

So we asked the team how they take theirs. Some of us keep it simple and drink it black. Some of us have an order that takes a full breath to say out loud.

Check out how the CJM team takes their caffeine, then tell us in the comments how you take yours. We're always looking for ideas for the next office coffee run.

Thirty years ago, Debbie Delardi started at CJM as an assistant to one of our founding partners. This year, we're celebrating three decades of her keeping this office running and the whole team accountable.

Debbie started her career in New York's mortgage banking industry before moving to Northern Virginia in 1991. She joined CJM in 1996, and she's been at the center of this firm ever since, now serving as our Managing Director.

Outside the office, Debbie used to run her own cupcake and wedding cake shop. Parker still talks about the cake she baked for his own wedding years ago. These days she's traded the shop for a garden, and the office gets the benefit all summer with fresh vegetables she brings in to share!

We marked Debbie's actual anniversary back in May, but the whole team wanted the chance to celebrate her properly in person. Thirty years, Debbie. Thank you for every one of them!

5 habits every 529 plan holder should have:

1. Match withdrawals to the same tax year as the expense
2. Know qualified vs. non-qualified expenses
3. Keep detailed receipts (you may need them if audited)
4. Confirm your school's payment policy if sending funds directly
5. Understand off-campus room & board rules

Pro tip: A dedicated bank account just for college expenses makes tracking and reimbursement so much easier.

Want to learn more about paying for college the right way? Watch the full video at the link in the description.

How does 529 money actually get to your college?

There's no direct "529 → college portal" pipeline. Here's how it works:

1. Your college has a portal connected to your bank account
2. Your 529 plan connects to that same bank account
3. Funds move: 529 → bank account → portal → college

The key is timing. Got an invoice due soon? Reach out as soon as you get it so we can make sure your accounts are connected and the money moves in time.

A little setup now = zero payment stress later.
