🌌 Scientists may have caught their first direct glimpse of one of the universe’s biggest mysteries.
Researchers with the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detected a single-particle interaction that they can’t explain with known background signals. One possibility is that it came from a WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle), a leading hypothetical candidate for dark matter. đź”
Dark matter is thought to make up about 85% of the universe’s mass, but scientists still don’t know exactly what it is.
The finding is intriguing, but it’s not yet a confirmed discovery. Researchers say the event isn’t statistically significant enough on its own, and there’s still a small chance it could be explained by known background activity.
✨ Still, because dark matter interactions are expected to be extremely rare, even a handful of similar events could move scientists much closer to an answer.
