Need a copy of your tax information? Knowing which IRS transcript you need can save you time and help ensure you’re providing the right documentation.

The IRS offers five types of transcripts:

• Tax Return Transcript — Most line items from your original return
• Tax Account Transcript — Filing status, taxable income, payments and changes
• Record of Account — Combines your tax return and tax account information
• Wage & Income Transcript — W-2s, 1098s, 1099s and other income information reported to the IRS
• Verification of Non-Filing — Shows the IRS has no record of a processed return

Most transcripts are available free through your IRS Online Account.

As a reminder, our summer hours end August 31, and regular office hours resume September 1.

❓𝐅𝐀𝐐 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫?

The answer depends on several factors, including your business structure, profitability and the work you perform.

🔹 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 generally take owner’s draws rather than receiving a traditional salary.

🔹 𝐒 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 who work in the business are generally required to pay themselves “reasonable compensation” before taking additional distributions.

🔹 𝐂 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 who work as employees typically receive wages through payroll.

So, what counts as a “reasonable” salary? Factors can include your responsibilities, experience, hours worked, industry and what someone performing similar work would typically earn.

There isn’t one number that works for every business. Your compensation strategy should reflect both IRS requirements and the financial health of your business.
