Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts (a type of IRA for children) that parents or guardians can open for any eligible U.S. child under 18 who has a Social Security number. Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, who are U.S. citizens also qualify for a one-time $1,000 government contribution from the Treasury that does not count against the $5,000 annual contribution limit.
For a newborn, the first requirement is a Social Security number. Hospitals, birthing centers, and licensed midwives typically handle this through the Enumeration at Birth program. As of July 2026, Social Security has updated guidance so parents can also elect to open a Trump Account during that same hospital process. Ask the hospital staff when you apply for the baby’s SSN.
If that option is not available or you have already left the hospital, use one of these official methods:
- Go to TrumpAccounts.gov or the IRS Trump Accounts page (irs.gov/trumpaccounts). Sign in or create an IRS Online Account using ID.me identity verification, then complete and submit IRS Form 4547 (Trump Account Election).
- Download the official Trump Accounts app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and follow the prompts (or use the web version at trumpaccount.com).
- File Form 4547 with your tax return.
You will need the baby’s full name, date of birth, SSN, and address, plus your own identifying information and contact details. There is no fee to open the account. After the form is processed you should receive an activation email only from [email protected]. Follow the instructions in that email (or in the app) to finish setup. The $1,000 seed money, if the child qualifies, is deposited after activation.
Watch for scams: Treasury and authorized providers will never ask for passwords or one-time codes by phone, text, or unsolicited email. Official communications come from the addresses above or through the official app. If you have questions, call the Trump Accounts call center at 1-866-USA-4547 or visit TrumpAccounts.gov directly. You can open the account any time before the child turns 18.
