💡 An HSA might be one of the best tax-advantaged accounts available, but many people aren’t using it to its full potential.
Most people use a Health Savings Account like this:
1. Put money into the HSA
2. Have a medical expense
3. Immediately use the HSA to pay the bill
There’s nothing wrong with that. But for families who have the cash flow to pay current medical expenses out of pocket, there may be a better long-term strategy.
An HSA has a unique triple tax advantage:
✅ Contributions can be tax-deductible or pre-tax
✅ Investments inside the account can grow tax-free
✅ Withdrawals for qualified medical expenses can be tax-free
Instead of spending the HSA every year, consider this strategy:
Max out the HSA → Invest the balance → Pay current medical expenses out of pocket → Save your receipts.
Why save the receipts?
Under current tax rules, there generally isn't a deadline requiring you to reimburse yourself immediately for a qualified medical expense incurred after the HSA was established.
That means you could pay a $5,000 medical bill today, keep the documentation, allow that $5,000 to remain invested in your HSA for years, and potentially reimburse yourself for that original expense much later — tax-free. Meanwhile, the money you didn't withdraw has the opportunity to compound.
For 2026, the HSA contribution limits are:
• $4,400 for self-only coverage
• $8,750 for family coverage
• An additional $1,000 catch-up contribution is available beginning at age 55.
You must be HSA-eligible, including having qualifying high-deductible health plan coverage and meeting the other eligibility requirements.
One more reason we like HSAs for long-term planning: after age 65, money withdrawn for something other than qualified medical expenses is no longer subject to the additional 20% tax. The withdrawal is generally taxable as ordinary income, similar to a traditional IRA. Qualified medical withdrawals can still be tax-free.
For the right family, an HSA isn't just a medical spending account. It can be a powerful part of a long-term tax and retirement strategy.
At Airington & Associates, we believe good tax planning is about more than preparing a return. It's about understanding the rules and using the opportunities available to build long-term wealth.
