What happens to hourly billing when AI lets you complete work in a fraction of the time?

The work may take less time, but that doesn’t mean it provides less value.

In Part 2 of my conversation with Les Bryson, we look at how AI and automation are changing the economics of accounting work and why this may be the right time for firms to reconsider traditional hourly billing.

We also talk about something clients really appreciate: knowing what they’re going to pay before the bill arrives.

Predictable pricing can make budgeting easier and may even make clients more comfortable calling you when they need advice.

Part 3 is coming next week as we continue looking at what the IRS guidance means for tax and accounting professionals using AI.

AI is reducing the time accounting work takes. Les Bryson explains why fixed fee pricing may offer firms and clients a better model.

Are you using AI in your tax or accounting work?

Then there’s another question worth asking: What process do you have for checking its work?

I talked with tax consulting veteran Les Bryson about IRS guidance addressing AI use in federal tax practice.

We discuss verification, written review processes, protecting client data, and why AI should support your expertise rather than replace it.

This is Part 1 of our three-part conversation.

Part 2 is coming tomorrow, when Les and I tackle what AI could mean for the traditional billable-hour model.

What does IRS AI guidance mean for tax professionals? Les Bryson explains verification, competence, workflows and client data.

What happens when AI completes in 30 minutes what once took your accounting team 40 hours?

Do you bill the client for 40 hours? Thirty minutes? Or is it time to stop pricing the work primarily by the hour?

That's what I'm talking about in this week's Financially Fit Business podcast.

I share why I think value pricing deserves a serious look, how predictable pricing can improve the client relationship, and why your firm's profitability still has to come first.

I also get into another interesting question: if we're changing how clients pay for the work, should we eventually rethink how we measure team productivity too?

It's a different way of looking at an industry that's changing very quickly.

AI is changing how accounting work gets done. See how value pricing can improve client costs, firm profit, and team productivity.

How do you know whether your business is financially healthy?

If your first answer is, “We’re profitable,” there’s more you should be looking at.

A profitable business can still have cash flow problems. Revenue can increase while margins decline. Accounts receivable can quietly get slower. Expenses can start growing faster than sales.

And sometimes those changes happen gradually enough that they’re easy to miss.

That’s why I tell business owners to look beyond the bottom line.

Ask yourself:

Is profitability improving or declining?

Is my cash position getting stronger?

Are customers taking longer to pay?

Are expenses or debt moving in the wrong direction?

What have my financial ratios been doing over the past several months?

Those questions can tell you much more about where your business is headed than simply asking whether you made money last month.

I’ve put together a broader look at the numbers and trends that can help you better understand your business’s financial health:

Learn how to use your P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow and financial ratios to better understand your business health.
