When moving to a different state, changes to your state taxes on income and property may get most of your attention. But state estate taxes should also be part of the equation. Some states impose their own estate or inheritance taxes, often with exemption amounts significantly lower than the current federal exemption of $15 million. State rules also differ on tax rates and residency requirements for being subject to state taxes. Before relocating, call us for help reviewing how your destination state’s tax laws could affect your estate plan.

The IRS says you’re deceased, but you’re very much alive. It sounds unbelievable, but this unusual situation can happen when an incorrect Social Security number (SSN) is entered on your tax return or when Social Security Administration (SSA) records mistakenly indicate that you or your spouse have died. If you receive IRS Notice CP01H, verify that the SSN on the return in question matches your Social Security card. If it does, contact the SSA to see whether its records need to be corrected. Then follow the notice instructions to unlock your IRS account. Call us for help resolving this issue promptly.

If you’re sending money abroad, beware of a possible 1% excise tax. This new tax generally applies to transfers of cash, money orders or cashier’s checks from U.S. senders to foreign recipients via certain remittance transfer providers such as Western Union and MoneyGram. But transfers made via credit or debit card, bank account transfer, or digital wallet aren’t subject to the excise tax. Essentially, the tax doesn’t apply to transfers from accounts in financial institutions subject to Bank Secrecy Act requirements or to credit or debit cards issued in the U.S. So to avoid the extra expense, consider using a card or ACH transfer from your own bank account.

When a person dies, his or her executor files an income tax return for the year of death. For purposes of the final return, the tax year begins on Jan. 1 and ends on the date of death. The return is due by April 15 of the following calendar year. But in the year of death, a surviving spouse is generally deemed to be married for the entire calendar year, so he or she can file a joint return with the estate’s cooperation. Filing jointly often provides tax savings, such as from qualifying for a lower tax bracket, larger standard deduction and higher IRA contribution limits. Call us for details.

Are you planning to buy a business vehicle, furniture or equipment before year end? The timing of your purchase could affect your 2026 tax bill. Depending on the asset and your circumstances, you may qualify for Section 179 expensing, 100% first-year bonus depreciation or a combination of both. To claim these breaks for 2026, qualifying property must be placed in service by December 31, 2026. Before making a major purchase, consider your projected taxable income, cash flow, financing needs, and any applicable deduction limits and eligibility requirements. Call us to discuss your options and help determine the right depreciation strategy for your business.

If you have a health care FSA, you may need to use your 2026 balance by Dec. 31 or lose it. But some FSAs offer a 2 1/2-month grace period or let you roll over up to $680 for use in 2027. Check with your employer to see what your FSA allows. We can answer questions about which expenses can be paid or reimbursed by your FSA and help you determine whether there are additional year-end tax planning steps you can take related to health care expenses. Cryptocurrency holders: Be alert for a new IRS impersonation scam. Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters directing recipients to a bogus “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” The letters instruct recipients to scan a QR code that leads to a fraudulent website designed to look like IRS.gov. The site may ask for personal information, cryptocurrency wallet details, or exchange account credentials that criminals can use to steal identities or digital assets. If you receive one of these letters, don’t respond. Report any suspicious communication to the IRS immediately. If you have questions about an IRS notice or digital asset reporting, we’re here to help.

Your business can show a profit on paper and still face cash shortages because profit and cash flow measure different things. Profit reflects revenue minus expenses, while cash flow tracks the movement of cash in and out of your business. Cash shortfalls are especially common for growing businesses. That’s because you typically must pay suppliers, vendors and lenders upfront, and then wait for customers to pay you. Understanding the difference between profit and cash flow — and how to account for each — can help you make smarter financial decisions. Contact us to learn strategies for improving cash flow management.
