HOW TO TRACK CASH INCOME 💸
To track cash income from your job, you need to create a reliable paper trail by logging every payment, depositing the money into a bank account, and keeping formal records for taxes.
1. Maintain a Digital or Physical Ledger
Write down every cash payment immediately when you receive it. Create a simple spreadsheet (like Excel or Google Sheets) or use a dedicated notebook. Record the date, amount, employer name, and pay period.
2. Deposit Cash into a Bank Account
Take your cash to the bank and make regular deposits that match your pay schedule.
Keep your deposit receipts. This turns physical bills into a digital banking record, which acts as concrete proof of income for apartments, loans, or credit cards.
3. Create or Request Written Documentation
Ask your employer for a signed employment verification letter stating your pay rate and that you are paid in cash. Use an online pay stub generator to create your own pay stubs for each pay period to keep your personal records organized. Or buy a receipt book from local store.
4. Set Aside Money for Taxes
Remember that cash income is still taxable income. You should set aside 20% to 30% of your cash earnings immediately in a separate account to cover federal, state, and self-employment or F**A taxes.
