When should you claim Social Security? It's one of the most important and debated retirement decisions.

The truth is that there is no one answer. Age matters, but it isn't the only consideration.

Before deciding, ask yourself:

✓ How long do I plan to continue working?
✓ What other retirement income will I have?
✓ How could claiming affect my taxes?
✓ What does my spouse's benefit look like?
✓ How does Social Security fit into my withdrawal strategy?

The goal isn't simply to pick a claiming age. It's to understand how that decision fits into the rest of your retirement plan.

For aerospace professionals, the transition to retirement brings new challenges, important decisions, and complex considerations, such as:

* Pension elections that can't be undone.
* Concentrated stock positions
* Drawdown strategies for tax-deferred accounts.
* Healthcare costs.
* Defining what your wealth should do

Each one interacts with the others, and the window to get them right is shorter than most people realize.

In his latest blog, Scott Hammel breaks down the five financial decisions every aerospace professional should make before retirement: https://www.fmgwebsites.com/e1d1f50c-5f40-40ed-a1c4-d646e4bac334/blog/5-financial-decisions-aerospace-professionals-should-make-before-retirement

Your financial plan isn't the only thing worth protecting.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month—a good reminder to strengthen the safeguards around your digital financial life.

Start with the basics:

✓ Use unique passwords for financial accounts
✓ Turn on multi-factor authentication
✓ Be cautious with unexpected emails and texts
✓ Avoid accessing financial accounts over public Wi-Fi
✓ Regularly review accounts for unfamiliar activity

A few preventative steps today can help protect what you've spent years building.

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15.

For retirees, this is an important opportunity to review whether your current coverage still fits your needs and budget.

Consider reviewing:

✓ Prescription drug coverage
✓ Premiums and out-of-pocket costs
✓ Provider and pharmacy networks
✓ Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare options
✓ How healthcare expenses fit into your retirement income plan

Your healthcare needs can change. Your coverage—and your financial plan—may need to change with them.

A retirement date is only the beginning of a retirement plan.

As retirement gets closer, the questions become more specific. When will your paycheck stop, and where will your retirement income come from? How will you cover healthcare expenses? When should you claim Social Security? How could your tax picture change?

There is also the question of how your investments will support both your immediate income needs and your long-term goals. Choosing an age and building a balance are important steps. But a comprehensive retirement strategy goes further.

It coordinates income, investments, taxes, healthcare, and legacy planning so each part is working toward the retirement you’ve spent your career building.

The closer retirement gets, the more the details matter.

September brings a return to familiar routines as school begins, schedules fill, and the final months of the year come into view.

It is also a perfect time to check in on your finances. Take some time to consider what is working, what has changed, and what still needs attention before year-end.

Financial progress doesn’t always require a major change.

Sometimes it begins with simply checking back in and making sure your strategy still supports the life you’re building.

You still have three months to move your financial plans forward.

When September ends, there will still be an entire quarter left in the year, three months to revisit your goals, address financial decisions you’ve been putting off, and prepare for what comes next.

Use this time to review your retirement contributions, tax strategy, investments, and cash reserves, or return to a financial decision that still needs your attention.

You don’t need to wait for January 1 to make a change.

Use the final stretch of the year intentionally.

Early in your career, financial planning may feel relatively straightforward: build savings, contribute to your 401(k), and pay down debt.

As your career advances, your financial life often grows with it. Increased income, company equity, changing family priorities, and a growing number of accounts can introduce decisions that require a more coordinated approach, especially as retirement gets closer.

The strategy that worked at 30 may not be the strategy you need at 45, 55, or 65.

As your career advances, your financial plan needs to keep pace with the new decisions that come with it.
