Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) - a simple, six-digit safeguard that helps keep your federal tax return from being hijacked. 🛡️🔒
It’s free for anyone with an SSN or ITIN. A new IP PIN is issued each year, and if you request it online the new number is typically available starting mid-late January. The quickest way to get one is through an IRS Individual Online Account. ✅
If you can’t verify online, there are other paths: Form 15227 (if your AGI is under $84,000 individual or $168,000 married filing jointly) or an in-person appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Important: the IRS will never call, email, text, or message asking for your IP PIN - that’s a red flag.
Tax professionals can’t request an IP PIN for you, but we can use the IP PIN you provide when preparing and filing your return. If you’re unsure whether an IP PIN is right for you, our Enrolled Agents are here year-round to help - from tax planning to IRS representation.
