September is your window before the year-end rush.

By September, you know much more about how the year is actually unfolding. Revenue has taken shape, expenses are clearer, and changes in your business or personal finances may have altered your tax picture.

The good news is that there’s still time to do something with that information.

Our latest blog explains why Q3 is such an important planning window and what individuals and business owners should be reviewing now, from estimated taxes and profitability to major purchases, retirement planning, and changes within the business.

Good year-end planning shouldn’t begin in the final weeks of December.

September 15 is more than a deadline

September 15 is an important date on the tax calendar, marking the third estimated tax payment deadline for many individuals and the extended filing deadline for many calendar-year S corporations and partnerships.

But there’s another reason we think September deserves your attention.

By this point in the year, you have months of actual financial information to work with. Your income may have changed. Your business may be performing differently than expected. You may have made investments, sold assets, added employees, or experienced other changes that affect your tax picture.

That means the amount that made sense earlier in the year may not necessarily be the amount that makes sense now.

Rather than treating September as another box to check, use it as an opportunity to review where you stand and what the rest of the year could bring.

Have questions about estimated payments, an extended return, or year-end planning? Contact Waters Hardy. We’ll help you understand where you stand and what deserves your attention next.

The software you use affects more than bookkeeping. It influences reporting, efficiency, cash flow visibility, and your ability to make informed decisions.

Whether you're starting a new business, outgrowing your current system, or looking to streamline operations, choosing the right platform can save time and reduce frustration.

Waters Hardy helps clients evaluate, implement, and optimize accounting software that supports both their day-to-day operations and long-term goals.

The right system should work for your business, not the other way around.

Many people think tax planning happens in the spring. In reality, some of the biggest opportunities happen during the second half of the year.

August is a good time to review:
- Year-to-date income
- Estimated tax payments
- Retirement contributions
- Business purchases
- Cash flow and profitability

Small adjustments made now can often have a much greater impact than last-minute decisions in December.

If you haven't reviewed your financial strategy recently, now is an excellent time to start the conversation.

If your tax refund is delayed, you are not alone.

Many taxpayers experience delays even after filing accurately and on time. In some cases, the IRS may need additional time to review a return, confirm information, or resolve processing issues.

Getting clear answers can also be difficult. Phone lines may be limited, wait times can be long, and notices may arrive before a taxpayer fully understands what is being requested.

If your refund is delayed or you receive an IRS notice, it is helpful to:
- Keep copies of all tax documents and correspondence
- Review any notice carefully before responding
- Track dates, reference numbers, and prior communications
- Ask your CPA for guidance before taking the next step

These situations are easier to navigate when records are organized, and the next steps are clear.

At Waters Hardy, we help clients work through IRS notices and refund questions with steady guidance and practical support.

The IRS continues to modernize, but today's tax environment is becoming more complex.

The National Taxpayer Advocate's latest report to Congress highlights encouraging progress, including faster digital processing for most taxpayers. It also points to ongoing challenges for those who need additional assistance, reinforcing the value of planning ahead and having trusted guidance along the way.

In our latest blog, we break down what the report means in practical terms for individuals and business owners, and why working with a trusted advisor is more valuable than ever.

Back-to-school season is a good reminder that education planning starts early.

For many families, that planning may include college, trade school, technical certifications, or other training paths. A 529 plan can be one helpful tool, but it works best when considered alongside your broader education savings and tax planning goals.

Every family’s path is different. Taking time to understand your options now can help create more flexibility for the future.

The IRS recently announced a new Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) program that will gradually replace the long-standing First Time Abate process. Under the new system, eligible taxpayers with a history of filing and paying on time may automatically receive relief from certain penalties without having to request it.

While this is a welcome change, it does not eliminate the need to file and pay taxes on time. It also does not apply to every return type, and some taxpayers may still receive notices during the transition period.

Tax rules continue to evolve, and understanding how those changes affect your situation can make a meaningful difference.

If you receive an IRS notice or have questions about whether you qualify for penalty relief, Waters Hardy is here to help.
