If you’re sending money abroad, beware of a possible 1% excise tax. This new tax generally applies to transfers of cash, money orders or cashier’s checks from U.S. senders to foreign recipients via certain remittance transfer providers such as Western Union and MoneyGram. But transfers made via credit or debit card, bank account transfer, or digital wallet aren’t subject to the excise tax. Essentially, the tax doesn’t apply to transfers from accounts in financial institutions subject to Bank Secrecy Act requirements or to credit or debit cards issued in the U.S. So to avoid the extra expense, consider using a card or ACH transfer from your own bank account. How much should you budget for retirement expenses? One common guideline says 60% to 70% of your current income. Some expenses might decrease or disappear (commuting costs, mortgage payments), while others are likely to increase (health care, property taxes). Specificity, not to mention incorporating inflation into your calculation, is important. We can help — call us at 281-836-3741.

It’s the fourth quarter, small business owners. That means, just like in a football game, you have limited time to make winning moves — in this case, to lower your taxes for 2026. Many year-end strategies require time to evaluate, implement and document properly. Waiting until the last minute may leave you with little choice but to punt and hope for the best. The sooner you begin planning, the more options you may have in your tax-saving playbook. Call us at 281-836-3741 to huddle up and discuss a game plan tailored to your business.

If you’re thinking about financing a new vehicle, you may be able to deduct up to $10,000 per year of interest paid. The deduction is available for certain personal auto loans originated after Dec. 31, 2024 — even if you don’t itemize deductions. Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) limits apply, and only qualifying vehicles assembled in the U.S. are eligible. Before purchasing, consider whether eligibility for the deduction should factor into your vehicle choice. We can help run the numbers. Call us at 281-836-3741.

Business owners: Are you or your employees planning to go “back to school” soon? Two types of work-related education costs may qualify for business tax breaks: 1) those required to retain an existing job, license or professional status, and 2) those directly tied to maintaining or improving skills for a current trade or business. Deductible expenses can include tuition, books, supplies and possibly travel if the primary purpose of the trip is business-related education. However, you can’t deduct costs for education that help meet the minimum qualifications for a position or to qualify for a new trade or business. Contact us at 281-836-3741 to learn the ABCs of work-related education expense deductions.

Wondering how Sec. 530A accounts (also known as Trump Accounts) may be invested? The IRS has issued proposed regulations clarifying the investment options allowed during the “growth period.” This period begins when the beneficiary’s initial account is established and ends on Dec. 31 of the year the child turns 17. During this time, eligible investments generally include mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that track an equity index of mainly U.S. companies, don’t use leverage, and have annual fees and expenses of no more than 0.1% of the fund’s balance. The proposed regulations would apply to tax years starting on or after Jan. 1, 2026. Call us at 281-836-3741 with questions.

Avoid underpayment penalties by staying on top of estimated tax payments and paycheck withholding. If you expect to owe at least $1,000 in taxes after subtracting credits and withholding, quarterly estimated payments may be required. Withholding and estimated payments must generally cover 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax (or 110%, depending on your income). Unsure if you’re on track? Let’s review your situation now to help avoid surprises when you file your 2026 return next year. Call us at 281-836-3741.
