The Senate just approved the Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act, and it’s a big step toward making the IRS faster and easier to deal with. Here’s what it could mean for you.
Right now, even a simple IRS letter can drag on for months between getting the notice and actually getting it resolved. More complicated issues can take 200 days or more.
This bill is meant to fix that. It would move the IRS away from paper, so returns and letters are handled digitally. You’d be able to do more through your online IRS account. Instead of sitting on hold for hours, you’d get a callback. And the IRS would have to publicly post its wait times and backlogs, so there’s real accountability.
It also puts a clock on refunds. If you file a refund claim, the IRS would have to give you a written answer within 12 months. And if you’re stuck, the Taxpayer Advocate Service would have more power to step in and help, even during a government shutdown.
The IRS would be able to work with you and your accountant a lot faster, so issues get resolved in much less time.
The bill still has to pass the House; we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you’re dealing with an IRS notice right now, you don’t have to handle it alone. Talk to us at Venti Accounting.
