Q4 is a good time to review what youโ€™ve already paid, how your income has changed, and whether you need to adjust.

For many taxpayers, safe harbor is generally based on 90% of expected 2026 tax or 100% of 2025 tax, with a 110% prior-year threshold for certain higher-income taxpayers.

The next individual estimated-tax payment is generally due ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฑ, ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿณ.

Tax preparation looks backward at what already happened. Tax planning looks ahead at decisions you may still have time to make.

Q4 is a good time to review:
โ€ข Year-to-date profit.
โ€ข Estimated tax payments.
โ€ข Projected year-end income.
โ€ข Significant business purchases you're considering.
โ€ข Year-end planning opportunities that may apply.

And one point I think is especially important:

First ask whether the business needs it, whether the cash is available, and how it affects cash flow. Then understand the tax impact.

Preparation looks backward. Planning gives you time to act.

Q3 closes today. Before you make Q4 plans, look at five numbers:

Revenue: Are you on track with your annual plan?

Gross margin: Are higher sales translating into better profitability?

Accounts receivable: How much is still unpaid, and how old is it?

Cash: Is your cash position better or worse than it was at the beginning of the quarter?

Actual vs. budget: Where did performance differ from what you expected?

Quarter-end isn't just an accounting deadline. It's an opportunity to understand what happened before deciding what comes next.

Better Q4 planning starts with understanding Q3.

A tax deduction doesnโ€™t make a bad business purchase a good one.

Before buying something to reduce taxable income, answer these questions first:
1. Do we actually need it?
2. Do we have the cash?
3. Was this already planned?
4. Whatโ€™s the impact on our cash flow?

Only after that should you think about the tax benefit. Sometimes the better financial decision is to pay the tax and keep your cash.

If you work with independent contractors, there's an important 1099 change to know before year-end.

For payments made in 2026, the federal reporting threshold for Form 1099-NEC increased from $600 to $2,000.

That may mean fewer forms to file, but I wouldn't change how you collect contractor information.

Continue getting W-9s. Review your vendor records. Check for missing information. And don't wait until January to figure out who needs a 1099.

A little cleanup before December 31 can make filing season much easier.

The reporting threshold changed. The need for clean vendor records didn't.

If you need help reviewing your contractor reporting before filing season, ONEEVA Financial Group can help.

Hereโ€™s something we see all the time.

A business has invested in tools to solve problems.

But the tools donโ€™t talk to each other.

So instead of solving the problem, they created a new one.

Manual data entry. Inconsistent numbers. Nobody knows whatโ€™s actually true.

The fix isnโ€™t another tool.

Itโ€™s making sure the tools you have actually work together.

When data flows automatically and you have one source of truth, everything gets easier.

Thereโ€™s a big difference between bookkeeping and financial oversight.

Bookkeeping records transactions. Thatโ€™s table stakes.

But oversight? Thatโ€™s looking at the data and saying: "Here's what's working. Here's what's not. Here's what you need to change."

Most growing businesses need both.

If tax season is the first time you really look at your numbers, you're missing the opportunity to fix things while you still can.

Better approach: quarterly check-ins. See the patterns. Make adjustments. By the time taxes come around, you already know the story.

ONEEVA helps businesses stay ahead of their financials.

The first thing I review when I work with a new client is their chart of accounts.

Itโ€™s broken almost every time. Not catastrophically broken.

Just broken enough that nobody can clearly see profitability.

Too many accounts. Too many vague accounts.

Accounts that duplicate other accounts.

Accounts for things that happened once in prior years and never again.

Hereโ€™s the problem. You run a P&L, and it has 150 line items.

You canโ€™t identify patterns. You donโ€™t know which cost categories are actually the problem.

You canโ€™t compare year-to-year because the accounts changed. The fix is a chart-of-accounts audit.

Delete unused accounts. Consolidate duplicates. Rename vague accounts.

Organize it so you can actually understand what your financial statements are telling you.

Takes a few hours. Changes everything.
