OCTOBER 4 — A Tax Credit for Starting a Retirement Plan?

Small employers may be leaving a valuable incentive unused.

Eligible employers may qualify for a retirement-plan startup-cost tax credit of up to $5,000 per year for three years.

For qualifying employers with 50 or fewer employees, the credit can cover 100% of eligible startup costs, subject to IRS limits.

There is also a separate $500 annual auto-enrollment credit for up to three years for qualifying employers.

That can materially change the economics of adding a retirement benefit.

OCTOBER 3 — Know Your 2026 401(k) Limit

How much retirement contribution space are you actually using?

For 2026, the basic 401(k) employee elective-deferral limit is $24,500.

But that's only one layer.

Depending on plan design, employer contributions can substantially increase the amount going toward retirement — and profitable owners who need more contribution capacity may consider adding a cash balance pension plan.

The real question isn't simply:

"Do I have a 401(k)?"

It's:

"Is my retirement plan designed around what my business can actually accomplish?"

OCTOBER 2 — Payroll Tax Deadline

⚠️ Payroll tax reminder for applicable employers.

Under the IRS semiweekly deposit schedule, payroll taxes for payments made September 26–29 are due today, October 2.

Payroll deadlines aren't glamorous — but missing required deposits can become expensive.

As Q4 begins, this is also a good time to review your entire business tax calendar instead of waiting until year-end.

Payroll. Estimated taxes. Retirement contributions. Plan funding. Tax-return deadlines.

Know what's coming before it arrives.

OCTOBER 1 — SIMPLE IRA Setup Deadline

📅 October 1 is here.

For most existing employers establishing a SIMPLE IRA for the first time, today is the final day to establish a SIMPLE IRA effective this calendar year.

But choosing a retirement plan shouldn't be based on the deadline alone.

Business owners should consider:

✓ Number of employees
✓ Owner and employee compensation
✓ Desired contribution level
✓ Tax objectives
✓ Employee benefit goals

A SIMPLE IRA may fit — or another qualified retirement plan may make more sense.

SEPTEMBER 30 — SIMPLE IRA Deadline Tomorrow

Small-business owners: October 1 is an important retirement-plan deadline.

Generally, an employer establishing a SIMPLE IRA for the first time can make the plan effective between January 1 and October 1.

If you've been considering a retirement benefit for your employees, tomorrow matters.

And remember: SIMPLE IRA isn't your only option. Depending on your profits, employees and retirement goals, a 401(k), profit-sharing or pension strategy may provide significantly different contribution opportunities.

SEPTEMBER 29 — Year-End Tax Planning Starts Now

Waiting until December to start tax planning can mean fewer options.

For profitable business owners, the final quarter of the year is the time to review income, deductions, compensation and retirement-plan opportunities while there is still time to act.

A properly designed retirement plan may allow your business to convert taxable profit into deductible retirement contributions — while building long-term wealth for you and your team.

Don't wait for tax season to start tax planning.

Thinking about buying equipment before year-end?

Start with the business need.

Then look at the tax strategy.

For 2026, the Section 179 deduction limit is $2.56 million, with the phaseout beginning when qualifying property placed in service exceeds $4.09 million.

Certain qualifying property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025 may also qualify for 100% first-year bonus depreciation.

Those can be powerful rules.

But a deduction should not convince you to buy something the business does not need.

Ask:

Does the purchase make business sense?

Does the asset qualify?

When will it actually be placed in service?

How does the deduction affect this year's strategy?

What does it do to cash flow?

Visit MyPensionTree.com before making year-end business moves and stay current on tax-saving opportunities for small business owners.

Do not wait until December to start thinking about retirement contributions.

For business owners, retirement planning can also be an important part of tax planning.

2026 contribution limits increased across several plan types.

For example, the general employee 401(k) elective-deferral limit is $24,500 in 2026, while the standard SIMPLE IRA employee limit is $17,000. SEP contributions can reach as much as $72,000, subject to compensation and plan rules.

The right question is not:

“How much can I put away?”

It is:

“What retirement strategy fits my business, income, employees, cash flow, and long-term goals?”

Plan type and contribution deadlines matter, so this is something to review before the end of the year.

Visit MyPensionTree.com to learn how retirement planning can connect tax savings with long-term wealth building.

Finishing your 2025 return should tell you more than what happened last year.

Use those numbers to improve 2026.

Compare:

2025 income vs. 2026 income.

Estimated taxes paid.

Payroll and owner compensation.

Major purchases.

Retirement contributions.

Business expenses.

Cash flow.

Then ask:

What can still be changed before December 31?

Tax preparation looks backward.

Tax planning uses that information to move forward.

There are still several months left to make thoughtful 2026 decisions.

Visit MyPensionTree.com and use what you learned from last year's taxes to build a stronger year-end strategy.

Before an extended return is finalized, take another look at the records supporting your business deductions.

That may include:

Business expenses.

Mileage and travel.

Equipment and asset purchases.

Professional services.

Insurance.

Retirement contributions.

Other ordinary business costs.

The point is not to search for questionable write-offs.

The point is to make sure legitimate business expenses are properly recorded and supported.

A deduction is much more useful when the documentation behind it is clear.
