We like to think we're in control.

Researching, planning, making careful decisions based on what we think will happen down the road.

That's a good thing.

But there's a difference between making a thoughtful decision and believing we can control the outcome.

Markets, the economy, health, careers, and countless other factors can change things we never saw coming.

Good financial planning accounts for what we can control while preparing for what we can't.

Stocks finished the third quarter mixed. The S&P 500 gained 2.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.47%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 2.70%. Halloween is next on the calendar, with U.S. consumers expected to spend \$13.5 billion USD this year and 6.26 million Canadian children in their trick-or-treating years.

Stocks were mixed in the third quarter as economic, geopolitical, and corporate earnings news pushed the broad market higher while weighing on the Dow Industrials.

Buy or sell.

Save or spend.

Invest or hold cash.

We make financial decisions every day, often without knowing exactly how they'll turn out.

The problem isn't uncertainty. That's unavoidable.

The problem is building your financial future around a guess.

Planning gives you a way to prepare for different possibilities instead of hoping for one specific outcome.

None of us knows exactly what's coming next.

Markets change. Jobs change. Families change. Priorities change. Sometimes life throws something at us that wasn't on the plan at all.

Financial planning isn't about predicting every outcome. It's about preparing for the fact that you can't.

A strong plan leaves room for the unexpected.

You can't control every financial outcome.

But you can make thoughtful decisions about how you're prepared for them.

In this video, Ashli Eaves - Financial Advisor & Author talks about the importance of building a financial plan that doesn't depend on everything going exactly as expected.

Watch to hear her perspective.

If you knew your retirement could last 30 years, would you plan differently?

You might think differently about inflation.

You might think differently about market volatility.

You might think differently about how much of your portfolio needs to continue growing.

That's why retirement planning isn't just about getting to retirement.

It's about preparing for everything that comes after.

Whether you're 30 years from retirement or already 10 years into it, your financial priorities aren't exactly the same.

Accumulating wealth requires one kind of strategy.

Preparing to retire requires another.

Living in retirement brings its own set of decisions around income, spending, taxes, risk, and longevity.

Your financial plan should evolve as your life does.

If your retirement strategy hasn't been reviewed recently, this may be a good time to take another look.

Looking at 30 years of market history can teach us a lot.

But there's an important distinction:

History can provide perspective. It cannot provide certainty.

We don't know what inflation, markets, interest rates, or the economy will look like 10 or 20 years from now.

That's why good financial planning isn't about predicting exactly what's next.

It's about building a strategy that can adapt. https://www.alignedwealthgroup.com/schedule-a-meeting

Retirement doesn't mean you can simply stop thinking about investment risk.

In fact, the way you manage risk can become even more important once you're relying on your portfolio for income.

The challenge is finding the right balance between protecting what you've built and allowing your assets the opportunity to grow.

There isn't one allocation that's right for everyone. Your strategy should reflect your goals, timeline, and circumstances.

Here's a retirement planning question worth asking:

What happens if the things you spend money on cost significantly more 20 years from now?

Your retirement plan shouldn't assume today's prices will stay today's prices.

Inflation can quietly reduce purchasing power over time, which is why it's important to build a strategy with the future cost of living in mind.

If you're approaching retirement, it's worth asking whether your plan has accounted for it. https://www.alignedwealthgroup.com/schedule-a-meeting
