🀝 What Does Good Mentorship Actually Look Like?

Early in her career, Audit Manager Mercedes Kindle, CPA, had a messy engagement that left her questioning whether public accounting was the right fit. What changed things was a mentor willing to have the hard conversation and help her improve.

Now Mercedes mentors associates herself, and she’s candid about what that takes: honest feedback instead of toxic positivity and meeting people where they are in the learning curve.

🧾 "I paid it" is where payroll taxes start, not where they end.

In this blog, WK's Ayona Weaver and Jordan Campbell-Fisher cover the payroll tax errors they see most, including payments applied to the wrong period, multi-state deposit schedules, new payroll system setups and worker misclassification.

They also share a short routine for checking EFTPS after each payroll, so a misapplied payment gets caught before it builds into a year-end problem.

β›³ Putting for a purpose!

Our Jefferson City office teamed up again with KRCG 13's Rod Smith for the Think Pink Putting Challenge in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A big golf clap for three-time office champ and Tax Supervisor Tyler Kroll, CPA, who sank a 36-foot putt!

As part of the event, WK donated $500 to benefit the Boost Program at the Goldschmidt Cancer Center of Capital Region Medical Center.

Check out highlights of WK's performance (and some darn-snazzy pink attire) in the video below: https://na2.hubs.ly/H08fgTL0

πŸ“£ We're hiring!

Williams-Keepers is looking for a Special Services Associate – Third Party Administrator (TPA) to join our team in Columbia or Jefferson City.

In this role, you'll help administer qualified retirement plans for our clients. That means:

βœ… Reviewing payroll census data, contributions, and distributions
βœ… Preparing compliance testing and annual government filings
βœ… Working directly with clients to answer their questions

You'll do this work with the guidance and review of our Special Services Department leadership, so you'll have experienced people in your corner as you learn the details of each plan.

We're looking for someone with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, a working knowledge of reconciling accounts, and a sharp eye for detail. TPA experience is a plus. If you already hold ASPPA's Introduction to Retirement Plans (IRP) and Retirement Plan Fundamentals (RPF) certificates, great. If not, working toward them is part of the professional development for this role.

This is an on-site position. Learn more and apply here: https://williamskeepers.com/open-positions/

πŸ“‹ Is your team ready for a Single Audit?

The things that trip organizations up during Single Audit fieldwork, like award tracking, SEFA reconciliations and follow-up on prior findings, usually show up months before the auditor does. Waiting until the week before fieldwork leaves very little time to fix them.

We built a checklist that lays out what to check and when, so your team can work through it throughout the year. It covers:
- Identifying and tracking awards during the year
- Preparing the SEFA and required reconciliations
- Financial statement close and prior-year follow-up
- Internal controls, payroll and procurement support

Documentation that's already organized means less back-and-forth once fieldwork starts, and every gap you catch first is one less for your auditor to find. Whether it's your first Single Audit or your tenth, it's a useful self-check.

Download the free checklist (no form to fill out):

πŸŽ“ WK at the 2026 Mid-MO Small College Career Fair

Thanks to Columbia College for hosting. We spent the day meeting students from Central Methodist University, Columbia College, Missouri Valley University, Stephens College, Westminster College MO and William Woods University.

Our booth team included graduates of three of those schools:

βœ… Columbia College graduates Zach Voss and Mercedes Kindle, CPA
βœ… Westminster College graduate Anna Giftos, CPA
βœ… Missouri Valley University graduate Emma Schulte

Each of them started at a small school and can share insight about paths that lead to a fulfilling career in public accounting.

πŸ₯‚ A Toast to Tomorrow: WK at the Community Foundation of the Lake's 18th Annual Ch*****ne Campaign

WK was proud to sponsor the Community Foundation of the Lake's Ch*****ne Campaign over the weekend.

The Ch*****ne Campaign is CFL's largest fundraiser of the year, and the proceeds go toward grants for non-profits across Camden, Miller and Morgan counties. CFL awarded more than $1 million in grants to local non-profits last year.

WK Audit Manager Zachary Brown, CPA, serves on the CFL board, which makes this one close to home for us. It was good to have our team there with him, supporting the organizations these grants reach.

πŸš€ Need a Little Momentum in Your Public Accounting Career Search?

Our Momentum program gives college students interested in public accounting a firsthand look at what the work is really like, not a brochure version.

You'll spend time in our offices learning directly from our partners and associates how our core values show up in the work we do with clients and each other. Clients join in too, sharing what WK's work means for their businesses, and a conversation about community involvement rounds out the experience.

You'll leave with a clear picture of how we build challenging, rewarding careers in a demanding industry.

The next Momentum program runs June 10-11, 2027. Applications are due March 15.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations, Mason Apperson, CPA!

Mason, a CAAS Senior at WK, just passed the CPA exam. It's a demanding test to clear on top of a full client workload, and he did it.

"I couldn't have gotten here without the people around me at WK. My managers made room for me to focus when I needed it, and that kind of encouragement makes all the difference. I'm proud to bring the CPA designation to the work I do for our clients."

Well done, Mason!

🏈 Black and gold in the parking lot, and a win to show for it.

The WK team traded the office for tailgate chairs this weekend, cheering on Mizzou as they took down Troy. Upper 90s and not a cloud in sight, but that didn't stop anyone from showing up and staying loud.

Days like this stick with people longer than most staff meetings do. Same crew, same energy, just with more sunscreen.
