Every good operation needs the right people behind it. Here’s someone worth having in your contacts. ☘️

I hired Tailored Logo to polish the logo for The Garrison Tax Company Ltd., and they did a great job. They’re now working on our website, and it’s looking sharp.

I found them through marketing videos, spoke with them, reviewed their previous work, and decided to give them a shot. I’m glad I did.

This week, they’re offering special pricing on CMS websites for The Garrison community. If your business needs a website—or yours could use some attention—contact Leon, their senior project manager, and mention Darla at The Garrison.

I don’t receive a commission. When someone does good work at a good price, I’m happy to pass their name around.

Got an IRS letter hiding in your desk because you’re afraid to deal with it?

Or did you call one of those big tax resolution firms, hear the retainer, and think, “That’s more than my house payment”?

Pull up a chair. We need to have a sitdown.

At The Garrison, we’ll look at what the IRS is asking for, explain your options in plain English, and tell you what our help will cost before you commit.

No shame. No scare tactics. No promises to make a tax bill magically disappear.

Maybe you owe. Maybe the IRS has it wrong. Maybe there are options you haven’t been told about. We start with the facts—and a plan that fits your situation.

But that letter isn’t getting any friendlier sitting under the takeout menus.

Want to work with The Garrison, but you don’t live in Colorado Springs?

Maybe you’re across the state. Across the country. Or maybe you live ten minutes away but work the kind of hours that make a 2:00 Tuesday appointment completely ridiculous.

Can we work together?

Of course we can.

This isn’t 1987. You don’t need to walk into my office carrying a shoebox full of receipts and wait your turn in a plastic chair.

The Garrison can handle business from wherever you happen to be.

Documents move securely. Signatures are electronic. Sitdowns can happen by phone or video. Returns can be reviewed remotely.

And if there’s business to handle with the IRS?

That’s why you hired me.

You go to work. Take care of your family. Live your life.

I’ll handle the tax problem.

You don’t have to live in Colorado Springs.

You don’t even have to walk through my door.

You just need someone in your corner who knows what they’re doing.

Welcome to The Garrison.

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions from Americans living overseas about exactly what The Garrison Tax Company Ltd. can handle.

The short answer?

Pretty much everything.

But I think what people are really asking for is the long answer: What am I actually comfortable handling when a U.S. tax return starts crossing international borders?

Living offshore presents its own set of challenges, but these are returns I’m comfortable working with.

That includes:

• Wages and self-employment income earned abroad
• Foreign investments and investment income
• Foreign rental properties and rental income
• Foreign Earned Income Exclusion qualification and filing
• Foreign Tax Credit calculations for taxes paid to another country
• Multiple sources of U.S. and foreign income
• Foreign bank and financial account reporting issues
• The additional filing requirements that can come with maintaining assets or accounts outside the United States

And just because you live outside the United States doesn’t mean the IRS stopped caring about your tax return.

One of the biggest issues with expat taxation isn’t necessarily the amount of tax owed. It’s knowing which exclusions, credits, reporting requirements, and filing obligations apply to your particular situation—and making sure they work together correctly.

So, yes, living abroad can make your tax situation more complicated.

It doesn’t mean you need to figure it out alone.

🍀 THE DOORS ARE OPEN. 🍀

The sign is up.

The lights are on.

And The Garrison Tax Company Ltd. is officially live.

This was never meant to be another quiet little tax office where somebody types numbers into a computer, hands you a folder, and tells you they’ll see you next April.

That’s not what we built.

The Garrison is where you bring the problem.

The return you’ve been putting off.

The business that grew faster than your bookkeeping did.

The partnership nobody explained properly.

The stack of IRS letters sitting unopened on the counter.

The tax bill that doesn’t make sense.

The year you’d rather not discuss.

The books you swear you’re going to straighten out next weekend.

Bring it.

We’re not here to clutch our pearls.

We’re here to figure out what happened, what the government thinks happened, what actually happened, and what we’re going to do about it.

Because taxes are rarely just numbers.

They’re marriages and divorces.

New businesses and failed ones.

Retirement.

Inheritance.

Kids.

Property.

Payroll.

Bad advice.

Good intentions.

Missed deadlines.

And sometimes a spectacular series of decisions that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time.

We’ve seen complicated.

Complicated doesn’t scare us.

At The Garrison, we handle individual and business tax preparation, partnerships, S corporations, trusts and estates, bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning, advisory, and IRS representation and resolution.

But that’s the menu.

What we really sell is something harder to put on a price sheet:

A plan.

You walk in with a mess.

We sort it.

You walk in with questions.

We answer them.

You get a letter from the IRS?

Put it on the table.

You’re three years behind?

Tell us which three.

You started a business and have absolutely no idea whether you did any of the tax part correctly?

Congratulations.

You are considerably more normal than you think.

There will be no lecture.

There will be no tax-professional theater designed to make you feel stupid.

There will, however, probably be questions.

There will definitely be paperwork.

And there may occasionally be a sentence beginning with:

“All right. Here’s what we’re going to do.”

That’s The Garrison.

We built this firm around the belief that people deserve to understand what’s happening with their own money.

No smoke.

No mystery.

No hiding behind twelve-syllable tax terminology when plain English will do.

We’ll tell you what we know.

We’ll tell you what we don’t know yet.

Then we’ll find out.

Because you shouldn’t leave your tax professional more confused than when you arrived.

And you shouldn’t have to cross your fingers every April and hope nobody notices something went wrong.

Around here, we have a rule:

Luck isn’t a tax strategy.

Planning is.

Documentation is.

Knowing the rules is.

Knowing which rules matter is even better.

And when something has already gone sideways, knowing how to fix it matters most of all.

The Garrison has taken months of work to build.

Websites.

Systems.

Compliance.

Software.

Forms.

Policies.

Processes.

More forms.

Forms explaining the other forms.

Government registrations that apparently required proof of life, character, patience, and possibly a blood oath.

There were easier ways to make a living.

But I didn’t want to build something easy.

I wanted to build something good.

Something with a backbone.

Something that could become the place people call when they need somebody competent standing between them and a problem they don’t know how to solve.

That is why it’s called The Garrison.

A garrison is where you hold the line.

It’s where you regroup.

It’s where somebody has your back.

And that is exactly what I want this company to be for our clients.

So if your taxes are beautifully organized, your books reconcile to the penny, and every receipt since 2019 is alphabetized—

We’d be delighted to meet you.

If your bookkeeping system is currently a grocery bag and a prayer—

We should probably meet sooner.

So send us the organized people.

Send us the business owners.

Send us the complicated returns.

Send us the “I got this letter and I’m afraid to open it” people.

Send us the “my cousin said I could deduct it” people.

Send us the ones who need a plan.

We’ll handle the rest.

THE GARRISON TAX COMPANY LTD.

In this life, two things are certain.

A little Garrison update:

I have officially told the website designers that **we are ready to go live.**

Right now, the **tentative launch date is September 1**. As I get firmer information from the design team, I’ll keep everyone here updated.

This website has taken a lot more work, revisions, questions, second-guessing, and “nope, that doesn’t sound like us” than I ever expected—but I wanted it to actually feel like **The Garrison Tax Company Ltd.**, not another generic tax website.

When it goes live, you’ll be able to learn more about our services, find resources, contact us securely, and book a sit-down when you need one.

Until then, **you can always reach me right here on Facebook, by email, or by phone.** The website may still be getting its final coat of paint, but The Garrison is open and working.

We are getting very close.

Thank you to everybody who has followed along while we’ve built this thing from the ground up. September 1 is the target, and I’ll update you as soon as I know more.

**In this life, two things are certain. We help you handle one of them.**

Let’s talk about the tax that makes brand-new business owners look at me like I personally betrayed them.

**Self-employment tax.**

You make a little money on your own.

You feel good about it.

You do the bookkeeping.

You find your expenses.

You get to the tax return and suddenly there is this **15.3%** number staring back at you.

And the immediate response is usually:

**“Wait. I have to pay ANOTHER tax because I’m self-employed?”**

Sort of.

But not the way it sounds.

The IRS did not create a special **“congratulations on starting a business, now give us 15.3%”** tax.

Self-employment tax is basically the Social Security and Medicare payroll tax you were already paying when you had a W-2 job.

The difference?

**At a W-2 job, somebody else was quietly paying half of it for you.**

As an employee, you generally pay:

**6.2% Social Security**
**1.45% Medicare**

That’s **7.65%** coming out of your paycheck.

Your employer generally pays another **7.65%** on your behalf.

You probably never thought much about their half because it never hit your bank account.

Then you become self-employed.

Congratulations.

**You are now both people.**

Employee: you.

Employer: also you.

Payroll department: probably you at 11:47 at night wondering why QuickBooks hates you.

That’s where the **15.3% self-employment tax rate** comes from.

It isn’t really an extra tax for being self-employed.

**It’s the same Social Security and Medicare system — only now there is no employer standing next to you to pick up their side of the bill.**

But there is another piece people miss.

The government does give you an adjustment.

Self-employment tax generally isn’t calculated on 100% of your net self-employment earnings.

It generally starts with **92.35%**.

And that number isn't random.

Take 100%.

Subtract the 7.65% employer-equivalent portion.

You get:

**92.35%.**

So if your Schedule C shows **$10,000 in net profit**, we generally don't just take $10,000 and slap 15.3% on it.

The self-employment tax calculation starts with about **$9,235**.

That works out to roughly **$1,413 of self-employment tax** before considering other limitations or circumstances.

And there is one more adjustment.

You can generally deduct **half of your self-employment tax** when calculating adjusted gross income.

Why?

Because if you were an employer paying payroll tax for an employee, the employer's share would generally be a business expense.

Again:

**The tax code is trying to recognize that you are wearing both hats.**

Now, before somebody gets excited:

That deduction does **not** erase the self-employment tax.

And self-employment tax is separate from your regular federal income tax.

You may owe both.

Your W-2 friends are dealing with both too.

Theirs just disappears paycheck by paycheck before they ever get the chance to become emotionally attached to the money.

Yours lands on the return all at once and has the audacity to look surprised that you're upset.

**That is why planning matters.**

If you're self-employed, every dollar that hits your bank account is not automatically yours to spend.

Some of it may belong to Social Security.

Some to Medicare.

Some to federal income tax.

Some to the state.

And the time to figure that out is **while you're earning the money** — not next April when we're both staring at the return wondering where twelve months of tax payments are supposed to magically come from.

That's what we do at **The Garrison**.

We don't just tell you that you owe something.

We tell you **what it is.**

Why it's there.

How it was calculated.

And what we're going to do differently going forward.

Because people aren't stupid.

**The system is complicated.**

There's a difference.

Bring us the business.

Bring us the numbers.

Bring us the question you think you're supposed to already know.

We'll start where you are and figure out the next move.

**In this life, two things are certain. We help you handle one of them.**

Quarterly taxes are coming.

And before somebody says, “Wait, I thought taxes were due in April”…

Welcome to the wonderful world of estimated tax payments.

The IRS operates on a pay-as-you-go system. If you’re making money that doesn’t have enough tax withheld from it—self-employment income, side work, investment income, rental income, and similar income—you may need to make payments during the year instead of waiting until you file your return.

For individuals, the conversation generally starts when you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and refundable credits.

And no, “quarterly” does not mean every three months.

Because apparently that would have been too straightforward.

The 2026 estimated-payment dates are:

April 15, 2026
June 15, 2026
September 15, 2026
January 15, 2027

Which means our next one is September 15.

Here’s where people get into trouble: estimated taxes aren't necessarily just “take what I owed last year and divide it by four.”

Your income may have changed. Your business may be doing better. You may have added a side gig, sold investments, changed jobs, lost withholding, or had one of the approximately 47 other things that can change a tax return.

And if your income isn't earned evenly throughout the year, your payments may not need to be even either. There are rules for annualizing income in those situations.

The goal isn't to send the IRS as much money as humanly possible.

The goal is to send enough, at the right time, based on numbers that make sense.

Because April is a terrible time to discover that your tax strategy for the entire year was:

“Well, I figured we'd deal with it later.”

Later has an unfortunate habit of arriving.

If your income has changed substantially this year, now is the time to run a projection—not next April when there's nothing left to plan.

Two things in this life are certain. We help you handle one of them.

— The Garrison Tax Company Ltd.
The IRS confirms that underpayment can trigger a penalty even if a taxpayer ultimately receives a refund, which is why I’d keep the emphasis on **planning now rather than cleaning it up in April**. ([IRS][1])
