Here's the Minimum Income Retirees Say They Need To Sleep Well (It's Less Than You Think)
When it comes to retirement, many people are surprised at the minimum income needed for peace of mind—often, it’s less than expected. I’ve seen firsthand, through years of helping clients at Stonehenge Advisor Group, that aiming for 70%-80% of your pre-retirement earnings is a solid guideline, especially when you focus on your actual monthly expenses. Your retirement income will likely draw from core sources like Social Security, investment accounts, and any pensions you may have. As we design a Tailored Retirement Income Plan, it’s essential to factor in longevity, healthcare needs, inflation, and paying off debt, while keeping your strategy diversified and flexible. Thoughtful planning around these elements can help ensure you truly rest easy in retirement.

How Much Can You Safely Withdraw If You Retire Early?
One of the most common questions I hear at Stonehenge Advisor Group is, “How much can I safely withdraw if I retire early?” The answer depends a great deal on how long you’ll need your portfolio to last. For a 40% stock and 60% bond allocation, research shows safe withdrawal rates are 3.9% for 30 years, 3.5% for 35, 3.3% for 40, and 2.9% for 50 years. Early retirees especially need to consider the timing of Social Security and embrace spending flexibility as part of a tailored retirement income plan. Thoughtful planning gives you confidence for every stage ahead.

SSI Payments Return in September
If you noticed a gap in your SSI deposit this mid-Q3, here’s what actually happened: since August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the mid-Q3 payment hit accounts on July 31 instead. No funds were lost or reduced—just a shift in the payment schedule. Regular timing picks up again with the September 1, 2026 deposit. For 2026, the federal maximums have adjusted upward after a ~3% cost-of-living increase: about $1,000 monthly for an individual, $1,500 for an eligible couple, and $500 for an essential person. Actual payments may be lower depending on income and living arrangements, though some states offer extra supplements. As someone dedicated to helping clients build tailored retirement income plans, I always keep an eye on these details so your planning stays on track. The SSI program remains a cornerstone for older adults and those who are blind or disabled, and keeping abreast of these updates is key to making the most of your benefits.

US Social Security Reform Before 2032
As someone who’s spent years guiding clients through the intricacies of retirement income planning, I keep a close watch on the health of Social Security. The latest projections show that the Social Security trust fund could be depleted by 2032, which would automatically trigger a benefit reduction of about 20% unless action is taken. The program’s future depends heavily on economic fundamentals: workforce participation, earnings, health, and savings patterns all play a role. The biggest threats? Weak labor markets, uneven earnings growth, economic downturns, and policy decisions that miss the mark in supporting workers. There are practical ways to strengthen Social Security—wider workforce participation, more flexible phased retirement options, robust childcare and leave policies, and immigration approaches that grow the labor force. However, current policies may actually slow population growth, with early projections for 2025 and 2026 even suggesting a net loss in immigration. These dynamics underscore the importance of a well-designed, adaptable retirement strategy—something I emphasize in every tailored plan.

Terry Savage: Dealing with fear in retirement
Many retirees face concerns about healthcare expenses, the risk of outliving their savings, the stability of Social Security, inflation, and the worry of cognitive decline. From years of working with pre- and post-retirees at Stonehenge Advisor Group, I’ve seen how much peace of mind comes from focusing on what we can control—educating ourselves, planning proactively, and having a clear strategy in place. By building a Tailored Retirement Income Plan, it’s possible to address each of these risks thoughtfully and create the security we all hope for in retirement.

Global Retirement Money Moves With Purpose
When it comes to retirement planning, purposeful action makes all the difference. Over the years at Stonehenge Advisor Group, I’ve seen how setting clear deadlines for big decisions—like relocating, downsizing, or rebalancing after tax and health coverage reviews—can help transform hesitation into progress. I often remind clients that even a failed $77K project can become a valuable lesson in resilience and adaptability, provided we’re willing to analyze missteps and adjust our course based on the facts in front of us.

It’s essential to truly understand every investment you hold: know what you own, why you own it, and recognize all costs—whether expense ratios, commissions, advisory fees, or surrender charges. The most successful retirement plans strike a thoughtful balance between financial discipline and enjoying what matters most. That means making sure your needs are covered, living within your means, and channeling extra funds toward what brings you joy—be it travel, family, hobbies, or giving back.

Guardrails are key. Regularly reassess your investment risk, maintain a robust emergency fund, and don’t underestimate the value of fiduciary guidance. An annual review is the perfect time to update beneficiaries and ensure your account access remains current. My approach has always been to help clients turn uncertainty into clarity with strategies that evolve as their lives do.

401(k) vs. Money Market Accounts: Where Should Your Money Really Go When Life Feels Tight?
When cash flow feels constrained, the question of whether to prioritize your 401(k) or a money market account is more relevant than ever. In my work designing Tailored Retirement Income Plans for both pre- and post-retirees, I've seen firsthand the importance of maintaining balance: building up liquid savings for unexpected expenses, consistently contributing to your 401(k) to capture valuable employer matches, and treating 401(k) loans as a true last resort due to their associated risks and penalties. Navigating these decisions is central to creating a retirement plan that stands the test of time, even when budgets are tight.

How to Turn Retirement Savings Into Reliable Income Without Outliving Your Money
One of the most important challenges I help clients navigate at Stonehenge Advisor Group is transforming retirement savings into a dependable stream of income that lasts. A truly tailored retirement income plan starts by covering essential expenses with guaranteed income sources, so you always have peace of mind about the basics. I also recommend keeping healthy cash reserves on hand—this helps avoid selling investments during market downturns, which can protect your long-term strategy. Maintaining a portion of your portfolio in growth investments is key to keeping pace with inflation, while employing tax-aware withdrawal strategies can help your nest egg go even further. And, of course, we always factor in healthcare costs to ensure your plan is comprehensive. Designing a retirement income plan isn’t just about numbers—it’s about making your savings work for you, so you can enjoy retirement with confidence.

Ways Fixed-Income Retirees Can Grow Wealth From Lower to Upper Middle Class
Throughout my years guiding pre- and post-retirees at Stonehenge Advisor Group, I’ve seen how even those on a fixed income can make meaningful moves to elevate their financial standing. A well-structured Tailored Retirement Income Plan often includes exploring passive income streams, trimming unnecessary expenses, turning dormant assets into sources of income, and employing tax-efficient asset placement strategies to help maximize after-tax returns. With a thoughtful approach, retirees aren’t just maintaining their lifestyle—they’re opening doors to greater financial security and growth.

Raising the Wage Cap Targets Social Security
As someone who helps clients navigate the complexities of retirement income planning, I keep a close eye on Social Security’s outlook. Current projections show the trust fund could be depleted by Q4 2032, which would mean incoming payroll taxes might only cover about 78% of scheduled benefits—implying a possible 22% reduction across the board. One proposal under debate is raising or even removing the wage cap (now set at roughly $184,500), so higher earners contribute more to support the program. While this move could address about 67% of the long-term shortfall, it may also impact the relationship between contributions and future benefits, especially for those with higher incomes. Other options include raising the overall payroll tax rate (currently about 12%) or increasing the full retirement age for younger generations. I’m committed to guiding pre- and post-retirees in understanding how these potential changes might affect their own retirement strategies.
