October is a good time to ask yourself one simple question: Do I know how my business is doing this year?

Not just how busy you've been.

Not just how much money is in the bank.

But how the business is actually performing.

Are you profitable?

Are expenses changing?

Is revenue where you expected it to be?

And do you trust the financial reports you're using to answer those questions?

There are still a few months left in the year, which means there's still time to understand where things stand and address issues before December 31.

You don't need complicated financial analysis.

Sometimes you just need clean, current books and a few minutes to actually look at the numbers.

It's hard to believe we're already heading into the last quarter of the year.

This is a good time for business owners to take a look at the financial side of the business before the year gets away from us.

Are your books current?

Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?

Are there transactions or balances you've been meaning to figure out?

And if you pulled up your Profit & Loss today, would you trust what it tells you?

You still have time to get things organized before year-end.

A little attention now can mean fewer surprises, less scrambling, and much cleaner information when your CPA needs it later.

You don't have to understand everything happening in QuickBooks to understand your business.

Most business owners didn't start their business because they wanted to learn accounting.

You should know how your business is doing.

You should understand whether you're making money.

And you should be able to look at your financial reports without feeling completely lost.

But you don't need to know how every transaction gets categorized or why a particular entry was made in QuickBooks.

That's part of what a bookkeeper is there for.

Good bookkeeping should make the financial side of your business easier to understand, not give you another complicated system to learn.

You run the business.

Your bookkeeping should help you understand it.

There are still several months left in the year, which means there's time to deal with bookkeeping issues before they turn into year-end problems.

Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?

Is QuickBooks current?

Are there transactions you've been meaning to figure out?

Would you feel comfortable sending your financial reports to your CPA today?

If the answer to any of those is no, you don't have to wait until January to deal with it.

A little attention now can make year-end much easier.

And if you've fallen further behind than you'd like, that's okay too. Cleanup and catch-up bookkeeping is exactly what it's there for.

Client work comes first. Then emails. Then everything else that needs your attention.
