Planning season starts in the fall, and it always opens with the same question: what did the last twelve months actually do?

That question is simple to ask and uncomfortable to sit with when the last stretch of transactions is still uncategorized. An event planner heading into her busiest quarter knows roughly what came in and roughly what went out. What she can’t see is which months carried the year, where the spending actually went, or whether the thing she cut back on in June was the thing that had been working.

Looking for someone who will explain your numbers to you is a different search than looking for someone to file them.

Nothing in QuickBooks raises its hand when a number is wrong.

A point-of-sale system syncs twice, and revenue shows up doubled. Owner's draws get coded as payroll, and profit drops for no real reason. A loan paid off years ago stays on the balance sheet, and the business looks buried in debt it no longer carries.

On the page, every one of those looks exactly like the truth.

A business owner came to us after a bank turned her down. Her balance sheet showed debt she had cleared years earlier. Once her books were corrected, she reapplied and used that loan to open her second location.
